So how significant is a whole fossilized ecosystem?<\/p>\n<p>Spoiler alert: very.<\/p>\n<p>Scientists are learning that in real time after discovering an entire <a href=\"https:\/\/www.popularmechanics.com\/science\/animals\/a40459906\/giant-prehistoric-insects\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Paleozoic-era;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">Paleozoic-era<\/a> ecosystem, which had previously been hidden under snow and glacier. The paleontological site\u2014located in the Orobie Valtellinesi Park in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.popularmechanics.com\/science\/archaeology\/a44831513\/new-study-reveals-secrets-otzi-iceman-mummy\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:the Italian Alps;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">the Italian Alps<\/a>\u2014is so well-preserved that researchers discovered everything from footprints of amphibians and reptiles and fossilized plants and seeds to skin prints and fossilized raindrops.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe very fine grain of the sediments, now petrified, has allowed the preservation of sometimes impressive details, such as the imprints of the fingertips and the belly skin of some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.popularmechanics.com\/science\/a62853780\/animal-cell-photosynthesis\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:animals;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">animals<\/a>,\u201d Lorenzo Marchetti, sedimentology specialist at the Leibniz Institute for Research on Evolution and Biodiversity in Berlin, said in a translated <a href=\"https:\/\/museodistorianaturalemilano.it\/documents\/87930661\/493948003\/COMUNICATO+STAMPA+scoperto+sito+con+fossili+sulle+orobie+valtellinesi.pdf\/af7f1289-e577-37c7-8ba9-a7be48936325?t=1731497715545\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:statement;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">statement<\/a>. \u201cThe shape and size of the traces indicate a quality of preservation and a remarkable paleo-biodiversity, probably even higher than that observed in other deposits of the same geological age.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Paleontologists discovered imprints of thin fingers, trails of long and curvy tails, and even ripples of waves on the shores of ancient lakes. The site remained completely concealed (and well-preserved) for millennia\u2014until, that is, the current rapidly warming climate caused <a href=\"https:\/\/www.popularmechanics.com\/science\/environment\/a62505173\/antarctic-greening\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:snow and ice to melt;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">snow and ice to melt<\/a> away. By 2023, enough of that cover had melted away for hiker Claudia Steffensen to notice some odd marks on the rocks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a very hot day last summer,\u201d Steffensen <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2024\/nov\/14\/hiker-discovers-first-trace-of-entire-prehistoric-ecosystem-in-italian-alps\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:told;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">told<\/a> the <em>Guardian,<\/em> \u201cand we wanted to escape the heat, so we went to the mountains. On our way back down, we had to walk very carefully along the path.\u201d It was then she saw a rock that struck her has odd, as it \u201cseemed more like a slab of cement. I then noticed these strange circular designs with wavy lines. From there, a team of researchers photographed and mapped hundreds of fossil traces at the site. they are still emerging on the vertical walls of the area and in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.popularmechanics.com\/science\/archaeology\/a62940134\/mexico-pyramid-landslide\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:landslide;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">landslide<\/a> accumulations below, sometimes as high as nearly 10,000 feet above sea level.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.popularmechanics.com\/science\/animals\/a61767757\/heavy-rains-unearth-dinosaur-fossil\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Dinosaurs;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">Dinosaurs<\/a> did not yet exist at that time, but the authors of the largest footprints found here must have been still considerable in size,\u201d Cristiano Dal Sasso, paleontologist at the<\/p>\n<p>Natural History Museum of Milan, said in a statement. He added that he believes the site contains examples of footprints from at least five difference animal species.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe imprinted steps happened when the sandstones and clays were still soaked in water,\u201d Ausonio Ronchi, specialists in sedimentology at the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of Pavia, said in a statement. \u201cThe summer sun, drying those surfaces, hardened them to the point that the return of new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.popularmechanics.com\/science\/environment\/a62642208\/water-cycle-malfunction\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:water;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">water<\/a> did not erase the footprints but, on the contrary, covered them with new clay forming a protective layer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The animal traces are joined by fossilized foliage, stem fragments, and seeds.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Orobic territory is proving to be a large open-air laboratory,\u201d Massimo Merati, director of the park, said in a statement. Teams are now using drones and a helicopter to map the fossils on vertical walls and recover certain finds in the unstable landscape, respectively\u2014especially as transporting boulders is impossible without the aircraft.
