Musk chimed in about the potential sale of the Trump-averse network after being alerted to it on X, a social media company <a href=\"http:\/\/www.salon.com\/2022\/10\/28\/dangerous-for-us-all-elon-musks-business-past-offers-worrying-signs-for-twitters-future_partner\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">he also owns<\/a>, by Donald Trump Jr.<\/p>\n<p>Trump Jr. pitched a purchase to Musk as the &#8220;funniest idea ever&#8221; on X.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much does it cost?\u201d Musk <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1860037420710080687\">replied.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>MSNBC parent company Comcast <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2024\/tv\/news\/comcast-cable-network-spinoff-nbcuniversal-1236215225\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced on Wednesday<\/a> that it&#8217;s looking to spin the network off into a new entity along with several other cable channels like USA, Oxygen and CNBC.<\/p>\n<p>The shareholder-owned spin-off grouping of NBCUniversal&#8217;s cable networks \u2014 called SpinCo for the time being \u2014 will theoretically be able to focus on rapid growth in a way that the Comcast conglomerate can not.\u00a0Comcast chairman Brian Roberts said the move &#8220;set these businesses up for future growth,\u201d but Musk and others can&#8217;t help but notice that the smaller portfolio of cable-only networks is also easier to sell.<\/p>\n<p>MSNBC is currently in the midst of a ratings and identity crisis.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thewrap.com\/msnbc-cnn-fox-news-viewership-craters-post-election-morning-joe\/\">Ratings are down<\/a> 38% post-election compared to pre-election 2024 averages. Star anchor Rachel Maddow <a href=\"https:\/\/theankler.com\/p\/msnbc-mayhem-rachel-maddow-pay-cut\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reportedly took a pay cut<\/a> in a new deal with the seemingly struggling network. &#8220;Morning Joe&#8221; hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salon.com\/2024\/11\/22\/morning-joe-has-got-to-go\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">didn&#8217;t help public perception <\/a>of the network any when they decided to meet with President-elect Donald Trump.<\/p>\n<p>Were Musk to go through with his purchase of MSNBC, it wouldn&#8217;t be the only spite-induced media purchase of 2024. Satirical newspaper The Onion<a href=\"https:\/\/www.salon.com\/2024\/11\/14\/the-onion-buys-alex-jones-infowars-at-bankruptcy-auction-for-undisclosed-sum\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> recently purchased<\/a> Alex Jones&#8217; conspiracist media company Infowars at a bankruptcy auction. That sale came after Jones was hit with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salon.com\/2024\/09\/25\/alex-jones-infowars-assets-will-now-be-sold-at-auction-to-pay-for-damages-to-sandy-hook-families\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">staggering defamation judgment <\/a>ordering that he pay $1.4 billion to the families of the victims of the Sandy Hook mass shooting. The Onion has said it plans to relaunch Infowars as a parody of itself.<\/p>\n<p>Should Musk want to do something similar, he&#8217;s certainly not hurting for funds.
