The <a href=\"https:\/\/la.usembassy.gov\/health-alert-u-s-embassy-vientiane-message-for-u-s-citizens-november-22-2024\/\">U.S.<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/foreign-travel-advice\/laos\">U.K.<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smartraveller.gov.au\/destinations\/asia\/laos\">Australia<\/a> have issued warnings for travelers in Vang Vieng. <\/p>\n<p>Methanol-tainted alcohol poisonings have occurred in Russia, South Africa and Peru over the years. In June, at least <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2024\/06\/23\/nx-s1-5016949\/methanol-laced-bootleg-liquor-kills-south-india\">56 people in southern India<\/a> died after consuming methanol-laced liquor. <\/p>\n<h3 class=\"edTag\">What is methanol and how deadly is it?<\/h3>\n<p>Methanol is a toxic form of alcohol, typically used for industrial purposes. It&#8217;s found in paint thinners and antifreeze.<\/p>\n<aside id=\"ad-backstage-wrap\" class=\"ad-wrap backstage\" aria-label=\"advertisement\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>But it can be extremely poisonous when consumed. As little as 25 milliliters \u2014 less than the size of a standard shot \u2014 can be lethal without proper medical treatment, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.methanol.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/FAQ-on-methanol-poisoning-treatment-20160322-EN-general.pdf\">Methanol Institute<\/a>, a trade association. Methanol poisoning can also cause blindness.<\/p>\n<p>The early stages of methanol poisoning can resemble typical alcohol intoxication. Its more severe symptoms \u2014 such as difficulty breathing, abdominal pain, and even coma \u2014 usually develop 12 to 24 hours later.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"edTag\">Why do some people put methanol in booze?<\/h3>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.methanol.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/WHO-Methanol-Poisoning-Fact-Sheet.pdf\">World Health Organization<\/a>, some people use it to produce spirits or create mixed drinks because of their low cost compared to taxed alcohol. In some cases, customers have been misled to believe they were buying a legitimate drinks at a bargain price.<\/p>\n<p>This dangerous, cheap kind of alcohol attracts people with low incomes or those who are alcohol dependent. The WHO also said tourists are at risk, &#8220;especially in holiday settings where high alcohol consumption is encouraged.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>There are several ways to treat methanol poisoning.
