He was 83.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tHis friend and podcast co-host Mark Young <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tmz.com\/2024\/11\/23\/chuck-woolery-wheel-of-fortune-host-dead-dies\/\" target=\"_blank\">told <em>TMZ<\/em><\/a> that Woolery died Saturday at his home in Texas, and he <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/MarkYoungTruth\/status\/1860516705086157107\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">posted about it on X<\/a>. No other details were immediately available.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tWoolery started out in show business as a singer in the orchestral pop band The Avant-Garde, whose most famous song, \u201cNaturally Stoned,\u201d made it to No. 40 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1968. The tune later served as the theme song for his (very) short-lived Game Show Network reality series in 2003.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tAfter the Kentucky native performed \u201cDelta Dawn\u201d on\u00a0<em>The Merv Griffin Show<\/em>, Griffin offered him a chance to audition as the host of a new game show he had just developed called\u00a0<em>Shopper\u2019s Bazaar<\/em>. Woolery beat out former\u00a0<em>77 Sunset Strip<\/em>\u00a0star <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/news\/edd-byrnes-dead-kookie-77-938511\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Edd \u201cKookie\u201d Byrnes<\/a> for the job, and the renamed\u00a0<em>Wheel of Fortune<\/em>\u00a0premiered on NBC on Jan. 6, 1975.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tWith the show pulling in a 44 share in 1981, Woolery requested a raise from $65,000 a year to about $500,000, what other top game show hosts were making at the time, he recalled in 2007. Griffin offered him $400,000 and NBC said it would pony up the rest, but that somehow infuriated Griffin, who threatened to take\u00a0<em>Wheel of Fortune<\/em>\u00a0to CBS, according to Woolery.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tNot wanting to lose the game show, NBC withdrew the offer, and Griffin proceeded to fire Woolery and hire Pat Sajak. Also let go: original letter-turner Susan Stafford, who was replaced by Vanna White.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tWoolery noted that Griffin \u201cwanted to get the best of me\u201d and said the two never spoke again before Griffin died of prostate cancer in 2007.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tWoolery, however, rebounded quite nicely with the syndicated\u00a0<em>Love Connection<\/em>, presiding over more than 2,000 episodes of that show from 1983-94. In 1986, he was making $1 million a year hosting that and NBC\u2019s\u00a0<em>Scrabble<\/em>, according to a 1986 article in\u00a0<em>People<\/em>. (That year, the magazine pointed out,\u00a0<em>Love Connection<\/em>\u00a0was grossing $25 million a year and drawing 4.5 million viewers a day.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tWoolery also had his own CBS daytime morning show, which didn\u2019t last long in competition with\u00a0<em>Live With Regis and Kathie Lee<\/em>; co-hosted the Family Channel\u2019s\u00a0<em>Home and Family<\/em>; and was the face of other game shows including\u00a0<em>Lingo<\/em>\u00a0on the Game Show Network,\u00a0<em>Greed<\/em>\u00a0on Fox and a rebooted\u00a0<em>The<\/em>\u00a0<em>Dating Game<\/em>\u00a0for syndication.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tCharles Herbert Woolery was born on March 16, 1941, in Ashland, Kentucky. His father, Dan, owned a fountain-supplies company, and his mother, Katherine, was a homemaker.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tHe briefly attended the University of Kentucky before dropping out to serve a couple of years in the U.S. Navy, then studied economics at Morehead State University while working a sales job at Pillsbury. He left school again, this time to pursue a career in music in Nashville, and he and singer-guitarist Elkin \u201cBubba\u201d Fowler founded The Avant-Garde in 1967 and signed with Columbia Records.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tAfter The Avant-Garde floundered, Woolery stuck with it as a solo artist, and with an assist from comic Jonathan Winters, he appeared on\u00a0<em>The Tonight Show<\/em>\u00a0in 1972. He also landed a gig as Mr. Dingle, an elderly postman and shopkeeper, on the syndicated kids show\u00a0<em>New Zoo Revue<\/em>\u00a0and guest-starred on\u00a0<em>Love, American Style<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIn 1974, he appeared with then-wife Jo Ann Pflug in the short film\u00a0<em>Sonic Boom<\/em>\u00a0and with Cheryl Ladd and Rosey Grier in the feature\u00a0<em>The Treasure of Jamaica Reef<\/em>\u00a0and was a featured vocalist on a new version of\u00a0<em>Your Hit Parade.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tHe earned a Daytime Emmy in 1978 for his work on\u00a0<em>Wheel of Fortune<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tOn\u00a0<em>Love Connection<\/em>, a man or woman would watch audition tapes of three potential mates, then select one for a blind date. The show would pick up the tab for their night out \u2014 $75 when the show first went on the air.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe couple couldn\u2019t talk to each other about their date until they were interviewed by Woolery on the show a couple of weeks later to see how it went. The studio audience was asked to vote on which of the three people in the audition phase they thought would be the best match, and sometimes there would be a second date. Other times, no way were these two ever going out again.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cThis is really the one show I do that I\u2019ll watch at home,\u201d Woolery said in the\u00a0<em>People<\/em>\u00a0story. \u201cI really like its unpredictability.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tFor his\u00a0<em>Love Connection<\/em>\u00a0trademark, Woolery told viewers that the program would return after the commercials in \u201ctwo and two\u201d \u2014 two minutes and two seconds, the length of the break back then \u2014 and had a hand signal just for that.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIn 1993,\u00a0<em>Entertainment Weekly<\/em>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ew.com\/article\/1993\/02\/12\/chuck-woolerys-love-connection\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">asked<\/a> Woolery is he \u201cwould you ever have gay couples\u201d on the show.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cNo,\u201d he replied. \u201cYou think it would work if a guy sat down and I said, \u2018Well, so where did you meet and so and so?\u2019 then I get to the end of the date and say, \u2018Did you kiss?\u2019 Give me a break. Do you think America by and large is gonna identify with that?
