Musk views Mars colonization as necessary to humanity\u2019s survival, while Tyson sees it as secondary to solving Earth\u2019s immediate challenges. It\u2019s an argument that has raged among scientists and culture observers as far back as the dawn of space exploration in the last century.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">In this latest squabble over Mars, Maher asked deGrasse Tyson how long it would take for Musk to \u201crealistically send humans to Mars.\u201d Maher played to a longstanding position of deGrasse Tyson, who has insisted we focus on bettering earth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">\u201cHow badly would we have to rat f**k Earth before it\u2019s worse than a place that\u2019s 200 below zero with no air and no water with six months to reach it?!\u201d Maher asked. Tyson yelled, \u201cPreach it! Preach it\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">\u201cI have strong views on that,\u201d deGrasse Tyson said. \u201cMy read of the history of space exploration is such that we do big, expensive things only when it\u2019s geopolitically expedient, such as we feel threatened by an enemy. And so for him to just say, let\u2019s go to Mars because it\u2019s the next thing to do. What is that venture capitalist meeting look like? \u2018So, Elon, what do you want to do?\u2019 \u2018I want to go to Mars?\u2019 \u2018How much will it cost?\u2019 \u2018$1 trillion.\u2019 \u2018Is it safe?\u2019 \u2018No. People will probably die.\u2019 \u2018What\u2019s the return on the investment?\u2019 \u2018Nothing.\u2019 That\u2019s a five minute meeting. And it doesn\u2019t happen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">\u201cAt some point somebody has to pay for it and just being interested in something is not the same thing as paying for it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">Musk responded Saturday on X, metaphorically slapping his forehead in disbelief.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">\u201cWow, they really don\u2019t get it. Mars is critical to the long-term survival of consciousness. Also, I\u2019m not going to ask any venture capitalists for money. I realize that it makes no sense as an investment. That\u2019s why I\u2019m gathering resources.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">Musk then got in a darker mood, questioning deGrasse Tyson\u2019s motives for his comments.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">\u201cThe real problem is that Neil decided to grovel to the woke far left when he got hit with a <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/hashtag\/MeToo?src=hashtag_click\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:#MeToo;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">#MeToo<\/a>. You can avoid being canceled if you beg for forgiveness and push their nonsense ideology.
