While that\u2019s behind Friday\u2019s estimate of $120, it\u2019s still a history-making number for a film based on a Broadway musical and ranks among the biggest openings of all time for a big-screen musical, as well as one of the top openings of the year to date. Globally, the movie\u2019s total is is $164.2 million.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<em>Gladiator<\/em> <em>II <\/em>is projecting a $55.5 million domestic opening, a strong start for a male-skewing, swords-and-sandals film (on Saturday, the estimate was $60 million). It\u2019s expected to draw in huge numbers overseas. where it has already earned $165.5 million for a global total of $221 million. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIn North America, combined domestic revenue for all films clocked in at nearly $200 million this weekend, a gain of 70 percent over the same weekend last year, when holiday entries <em>Napoleon<\/em> and <em>Wish<\/em> opened.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tSocial media has been abuzz with speculation that <em>Gladiator II<\/em> and <em>Wicked<\/em> would replicate the Barbenheimer effect this weekend and be the perfect pairing in terms of attracting males and females to the multiplex. While they won\u2019t come anywhere near matching the domestic openings of Barbie ($162 million) and Oppenheimer ($82.5 million), they are indeed appealing to nearly all demos, including playing to an ethnically diverse audience.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe Thanksgiving marquee will get even more interesting when Walt Disney Animation\u2019s<em> Moana 2<\/em> opens Nov 27. Led by Maona, the three films should result in the biggest five-day, Thanksgiving holiday (Wednesday through Sunday) of all time in terms of domestic box office revenue \u2014 hence the moniker \u201cMoanapocalypse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tFueled largely by females as expected, the well-reviewed <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-reviews\/wicked-review-cynthia-erivo-ariana-grande-1236062372\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wicked<\/a><\/em> earned a glowing A CinemaScore from audiences.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tFilmmaker Jon M. Chu\u2019s adaptation of the popular Broadway musical boasts a high-profile cast led by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/ariana-grande\/\" id=\"auto-tag_ariana-grande_1\" data-tag=\"ariana-grande\">Ariana Grande<\/a> and Cynthia Erivo. Universal is taking a major gamble in making two movies, with part two of <em>Wicked <\/em>hitting theaters a year from now. The first one cost $150 million to produce before marketing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tOriginally based on the best-selling novel by Gregory Maguire, <em>Wicked<\/em> tells the untold story of the witches of Oz, with Erivo as Elphaba and Grande as Glinda. Winnie Holzman, the stage production\u2019s book writer, wrote the screenplay for Chu\u2019s movie with Dana Fox. Academy Award-winning composer and lyricist Stephen Schwartz adapted the musical for the screen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tDirected by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/ridley-scott\/\" id=\"auto-tag_ridley-scott_1\" data-tag=\"ridley-scott\">Ridley Scott<\/a>, the $250 million <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-reviews\/gladiator-ii-review-paul-mescal-denzel-washington-ridley-scott-1236057985\/'\"><em>Gladiator<\/em> sequel <\/a>is the top pick for males, both younger and older, and earned a B CinemaScore. It hits theaters 24 years after the first film and stars <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/paul-mescal\/\" id=\"auto-tag_paul-mescal_1\" data-tag=\"paul-mescal\">Paul Mescal<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/denzel-washington\/\" id=\"auto-tag_denzel-washington_1\" data-tag=\"denzel-washington\">Denzel Washington<\/a>, Pedro Pascal, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/connie-nielsen\/\" id=\"auto-tag_connie-nielsen_1\" data-tag=\"connie-nielsen\">Connie Nielsen<\/a> and Fred Hechinger, among others.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIf estimates hold, <em>Gladiator II<\/em> will mark the biggest opening of Washington\u2019s career after American <em>Gangster<\/em> (also helmed by Scott).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe film sees Mescal playing a grown-up Lucius Verus II, the nephew of Emperor Commodus from the original film, played by Joaquin Phoenix.
