The clipping marks itself as the maiden to witness and capture such behaviour, as something like this has not been documented before.
The clip, filmed for Netflix‘s new series ‘Our Oceans’, shows a coconut octopus, also known as a veined octopus, as it fires tiny stones from its siphon — a tube-like structure octopuses use to swim and steer — at fish swimming by.The discovery occurred during the filming of the documentary in Southeast Asia, which focused on the effects of plastic pollution on marine life. The crew of the documentary focused on a lone octopus living in a trash-filled seabed. While later reviewing the footage, the team noticed the unexpected behaviour and couldn’t quite believe it.
The assistant producer and field director of the series ‘Our Oceans’, Katy Moorhead exclaimed and told Live Science via an email, “We couldn’t believe it! She was shooting fish, with stones, through her siphon! We were so surprised. Nobody had ever recorded veined octopuses using their siphons as weapons before.”
The team filmed the clip around 30 feet (9 meters) below the ocean surface in Southeast Asia. The filmmakers were initially looking at the impact of plastic pollution on the ocean, filming a lone octopus living in a trash-filled seabed. But when they reviewed the footage, they realised they’d captured a completely new behaviour.

undefined

Studying the behaviour:

Was it a one-time event? Or was it a learned defence? Curious, the team returned to observe the octopus. Over three weeks, cinematographer Roger Munns spent 110 hours capturing the animal’s actions. His footage showed the octopus gathering stones and debris, carefully loading them into its siphon, and firing them at fish that ventured too close. The series narrator, the former President of the United States of America, Barrack Obama said. “She turns her siphon into a gun!” The stones were fired out so fast it could only be seen in the footage in slow motion.

Precision in action:

One striking moment showed the coconut octopus throwing stones directly at a fish revealing its hiding spot. The fish was hit squarely in the face, forcing it to retreat. The projectiles moved so quickly that they were visible only in slow-motion playback, adding to the fascination of the discovery.

All about coconut octopuses:

Amphioctopus marginatus, also known as the coconut octopus and veined octopus, is a medium-sized cephalopod belonging to the genus Amphioctopus. It is found in tropical waters of the western Pacific Ocean.
Coconut octopuses are solitary creatures, living alone throughout their life. They are active throughout the day, but focus their hunting on dusk and dawn. Coconut octopus bury underneath the sand to escape predators but they also lodge themselves inside empty coconut husks – hence their names!
While the species may be threatened by fishing, its wide distribution is seen as enough to compensate against human impacts.

The coconut octopus is also known for its ability to change colour and texture in order to blend in with its surroundings. The coconut octopus is able to change the colour of its skin to match the surrounding environment, making it nearly invisible to predators.
Like all octopus, the coconut octopus is curious and aggressive. They normally leave their home to hunt, often as far away as twenty meters, retreating to shelter if threatened. They can dig into the sand if necessary and often seek shelter on the prowl, so are not always found in a protective structure.
The recorded ‘shooting’ behaviour is now under scientific analysis to determine its purpose. Jonathan Smith, another series producer, noted its effectiveness and said, “The fish were clearly startled and did then leave the vicinity of the octopus, suggesting it is an effective deterrent.”
Researchers are examining the footage to learn more about how and why the octopus uses this unique defence. Scientists hope this surprising footage will deepen our understanding of the intelligence and adaptability of marine life.

var _mfq = window._mfq || [];
_mfq.push(["setVariable", "toi_titan", window.location.href]);
!(function(f, b, e, v, n, t, s) {
    function loadFBEvents(isFBCampaignActive) {
      if (!isFBCampaignActive) {
        return;
      }
      (function(f, b, e, v, n, t, s) {
        if (f.fbq) return;
        n = f.fbq = function() {
          n.callMethod ? n.callMethod(...arguments) : n.queue.push(arguments);
        };
        if (!f._fbq) f._fbq = n;
        n.push = n;
        n.loaded = !0;
        n.version = '2.0';
        n.queue = [];
        t = b.createElement(e);
        t.async = !0;
        t.defer = !0;
        t.src = v;
        s = b.getElementsByTagName(e)[0];
        s.parentNode.insertBefore(t, s);
      })(f, b, e, 'https://connect.facebook.net/en_US/fbevents.js', n, t, s);
      fbq('init', '593671331875494');
      fbq('track', 'PageView');
    };
    function loadGtagEvents(isGoogleCampaignActive) {
      if (!isGoogleCampaignActive) {
        return;
      }
      var id = document.getElementById('toi-plus-google-campaign');
      if (id) {
        return;
      }
      (function(f, b, e, v, n, t, s) {
        t = b.createElement(e);
        t.async = !0;
        t.defer = !0;
        t.src = v;
        t.id = 'toi-plus-google-campaign';
        s = b.getElementsByTagName(e)[0];
        s.parentNode.insertBefore(t, s);
      })(f, b, e, 'https://www.googletagmanager.com/gtag/js?id=AW-877820074', n, t, s);
    };
    function loadSurvicateJs(allowedSurvicateSections = []){
      const section =  window.location.pathname.split('/')[1]
      const isHomePageAllowed = window.location.pathname === '/' && allowedSurvicateSections.includes('homepage')
      if(allowedSurvicateSections.includes(section) || isHomePageAllowed){
        (function(w) {
         function setAttributes() {
                    var prime_user_status = window.isPrime ?
