During some of that time, she transferred funds from Santa Cruz County bank accounts to her personal Wells Fargo Bank account and a Bank of Montreal account, according to court documents.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3vzcm1x0005356ml5k8iltl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI wire transferred the Santa Cruz County funds from the County\u2019s Savings Account and Checking Account for the purpose and as an essential part of carrying out the scheme to defraud to fraudulently obtain the funds for my personal use, all without authorization,\u201d Gutfahr said, according to court documents. \u201cI agree I owe restitution in the amount of $38,712,100.00.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3vzcm1x0006356mzdqf5pov@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Gutfahr also used fake business accounts to help conceal the transfer of funds from the Santa Cruz County bank account.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3vzcm1x0007356msfg1f6ii@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThese account names were materially false and fraudulent representations to intentionally conceal the fact that I was wire transferring Santa Cruz County funds to my Wells Fargo and BMO Accounts to embezzle the County\u2019s funds,\u201d Gutfahr said, according to her plea agreement.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3vzqoor0000356m4rfnc0cw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Gutfahr\u2019s attorney said in a statement Gutfahr wants to \u201cto take responsibility for the harm she has caused to Santa Cruz County.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3w4d7zd000t356m9u8cz0cz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cShe knows that by pleading guilty, and accepting the punishment she will face as a result, she is taking a step in the right direction to be accountable for her actions,\u201d Joshua Hamilton said. \u201cShe will work to remain on that path for the rest of her life.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3vzcm1x000a356moc1xh1i8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Gutfahr\u2019s plea shows the Justice Department\u2019s commitment \u201cto rooting out public corruption at all levels of government,\u201d Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General Nicole Argentieri <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/opa\/pr\/former-arizona-elected-official-pleads-guilty-embezzlement-more-38m-county-funds\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3vzcm1x000b356msuszq3a1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe expect public officials to serve as stewards of the government \u2026 not to loot it,\u201d Argentieri <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/opa\/pr\/former-arizona-elected-official-pleads-guilty-embezzlement-more-38m-county-funds\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3vzcm1x000c356mcbr6r0x9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Gutfahr, who has been released and had to surrender her passport, is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/opa\/pr\/former-arizona-elected-official-pleads-guilty-embezzlement-more-38m-county-funds\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">scheduled to be sentenced<\/a> on February 6, 2025.
