Chu<\/a> explained his approach to the sweeping musical\u2019s color grading, after some fans online lamented that the film did not contain the same technicolor prowess present in the original 1939 <em>The Wizard of Oz.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tIn a recent interview with <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/arts\/film\/article-wicked-director-jon-m-chu-hopes-new-adaptation-can-send-the-box-office\/\" target=\"_blank\">Canadian outlet <em>The Globe and Mail<\/em><\/a>, the <em>Crazy Rich Asians <\/em>helmer was asked about his approach to the pink-and-green tinged movie, which the interviewer deemed \u201ca little desaturated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t\u201cI mean, there\u2019s color all over it. I think what we wanted to do was immerse people into Oz, to make it a real place,\u201d Chu said of the decision. \u201cBecause if it was a fake place, if it was a dream in someone\u2019s mind, then the real relationships and the stakes that these two girls are going through wouldn\u2019t feel real.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThe filmmaker continued, \u201cIt\u2019s also [presented in] a way we have not experienced Oz before. It\u2019s been a matte painting. It\u2019s been a video game digital world. But for us, I want to feel the dirt. I want to feel the wear and tear of it. And that means it\u2019s not plastic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tDebate around the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/briskide\/status\/1831359127118864730\" target=\"_blank\">film\u2019s look<\/a> has stretched on since the beginning of September, lasting up and through the film\u2019s theatrical premiere Nov. 22. Some users on X have expressed distaste for the \u201cbacklighting\u201d and \u201cdrab\u201d coloring of the movie, while <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/juliaannecudney\/status\/1858356766737862943\" target=\"_blank\">others<\/a> have defended the aesthetic and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/wicked_era\/status\/1860512172889018598\" target=\"_blank\">hit back<\/a> at those trying to layer warming filters across shots of the film. Also notable is that the process of technicolor has largely <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2015\/07\/01\/why-classic-technicolor-was-glorious-but-too-expensive-to-last\/\" target=\"_blank\">been discontinued<\/a> and deemed impossible to replicate, given its cost and that the tech required has gone out of vogue.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t\u201cWe have the environment. The sun is the main source of light. You see the vast landscapes. You see the air. You see creatures exist here. These two characters that will go through two movies, their relationship with the land is important; their relationship with the nature of this land that the wizard imposed himself. The [color] contrast goes up over time because that is what Elphaba brings to this world,\u201d Chu concluded.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tRegardless, the discussion has not slowed the film down from defying gravity at the box office, <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2024\/11\/wicked-box-office-records-1236186470\/\">breaking a slew of records<\/a> including biggest global and domestic opening for a movie based on a Broadway show, for stars <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/ariana-grande\/\" id=\"auto-tag_ariana-grande\" data-tag=\"ariana-grande\">Ariana Grande<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/cynthia-erivo\/\" id=\"auto-tag_cynthia-erivo\" data-tag=\"cynthia-erivo\">Cynthia Erivo<\/a> and helmer Chu. The movie also had the largest global opening for a non-sequel film this year. One-half of \u201cGlicked,\u201d the theatrical event also featuring Ridley Scott\u2019s <em>Gladiator II<\/em>, the musical <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2024\/11\/box-office-wicked-gladiator-ii-1236184897\/\">fueled a $205 million opening weekend<\/a>, marking the best pre-Thanksgiving box office in over a decade.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tPart One of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/feature\/wicked-everything-we-know-1236041808\/\">adaptation<\/a>\u00a0of the Tony-winning Broadway production \u2014 itself based on Gregory Maguire\u2019s bestselling novel, which retells the story of\u00a0<em>The Wizard of Oz\u00a0<\/em>from the point of view of the Wicked Witch of the West \u2014 follows Elphaba (Erivo) and Glinda the Good Witch\u2019s (Grande) relationship prior to their eventual destinies.
