{"id":129835,"date":"2024-11-25T08:08:53","date_gmt":"2024-11-25T01:08:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hotvideos24.online\/?p=129835"},"modified":"2024-11-25T08:08:53","modified_gmt":"2024-11-25T01:08:53","slug":"bird-flu-virus-detected-in-california-raw-milk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hotvideos24.online\/?p=129835","title":{"rendered":"Bird flu virus detected in California raw milk"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n     data-ad-layout-key=\"-fb+5w+4e-db+86\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"7910942971\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div data-element=\"story-body\" data-subscriber-content=\"\">\n<p>State health officials said Sunday that bird flu virus was detected in a retail sample of raw milk from the Fresno-based Raw Farm dairy.<\/p>\n<p>The sample was collected by officials with the Santa Clara County public health office, who have been testing raw milk products from retail stores \u201cas a second line of consumer protection.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>County officials identified the virus in \u201cone sample of raw milk purchased at a retail outlet\u201d on Nov. 21, according to statements from both the state and the county. The county contacted stores on Friday and recommended they pull the raw milk from sale. The test results were confirmed on  Saturday by the California Animal Health and Food Safety Laboratory System at  UC Davis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis isn\u2019t surprising, given how quickly H5N1 seems to be spreading among farms in California and given the fact that these outbreaks on farms are being discovered in large part due to bulk testing of raw milk from farms,\u201d said Jennifer Nuzzo, director of the Pandemic Center at Brown University in Providence, R.I. \u201cWhat we don\u2019t know is how much risk H5N1 poses to people that drink unpasteurized, infected milk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The test was positive only for the \u201cH5\u201d part of the virus. However, health officials say an H5 finding in a California dairy product is likely H5N1. No other H5 bird flu viruses have been detected in dairy cows.<\/p>\n<p>Raw Farm has issued a voluntary recall for all quart- and half-gallon-sized milk products produced on Nov. 9, with an expiration date of Nov. 27, with a lot ID of #20241109.<\/p>\n<p>So far, there have been no reports of illness associated with this recall.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOut of an abundance of caution, and due to the ongoing spread of bird flu in dairy cows, poultry, and sporadic human cases, consumers should not consume any of the affected raw milk,\u201d wrote the state\u2019s health officials in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Nuzzo said evidence from animal studies suggests the virus \u201ccould pose a risk if ingested in large enough quantities, but we have not yet seen human cases resulting from raw milk consumption. Given that ingestion of raw milk has no credible health benefits, I personally would avoid drinking it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Researchers have found that barn cats who drink raw milk tend to die as a result of their exposure. And laboratory studies have shown similar results.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, the <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/environment\/story\/2024-11-19\/alameda-county-child-believed-to-be-latest-case-of-bird-flu-source-unknown\">CDC reported samples taken from a child in Alameda County<\/a> who was showing mild respiratory symptoms were positive for H5N1. It is unclear how the child was exposed to the virus, although investigators ruled out exposure to infected dairy or poultry animals. They also ruled out raw milk.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout California, <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/environment\/story\/2024-11-15\/h5n1-bird-flu-infects-six-more-humans-in-california-oregon\">29 people have tested positive for the virus<\/a>, and all but one \u2014 the child in Alameda County \u2014 are dairy workers. Nationwide, the number is 55, with 32 exposed via dairy, 21 via poultry, and two with no known source.<\/p>\n<p>In addition,<a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/environment\/story\/2024-11-13\/teenager-infected-with-h5n1-bird-flu-in-critical-condition\"> a teenager in British Columbia was also infected<\/a>, and has remained in critical condition for more than two weeks. The source of that child\u2019s infection also remains unknown.<\/p>\n<p>There is no evidence of person-to-person transmission of the virus.<\/p>\n<p>Since March, 402 California dairy herds have tested positive in the state; 616 herds have tested positive nationwide.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/environment\/story\/2024-05-12\/raw-milk-enthusiasts-uncowed-by-bird-flu-risk-in-dairy\">Mark McAfee, the owner of Raw Farm,<\/a> said that the testing he and the California Department of Food and Agriculture have conducted on his milk \u2014 since he started voluntary testing in late April \u2014 have all been negative.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the last two days CDFA has collected extra dairy samples from our farm bulk tanks and even retail samples and they are all officially Negative for HPAI,\u201d he wrote in a statement. HPAI is the acronym for Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza; it is often used interchangeably with H5N1, as well as other highly pathogenic bird influenza strains.<\/p>\n<p>The California Department of Public Health confirmed that the agriculture department had tested McAfee\u2019s milk after receiving news of the finding, and results were negative.<\/p>\n<p>Raw Farm is the largest producer and retailer of raw milk in the state, where the product is legally  sold in retail stores. McAfee said he has about 1,800 head of cattle on two dairies \u2014 one in Fresno, the other near Hanford.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. Food and Drug Administration does not allow for the interstate transfer of raw milk for human consumption, and advises the public not to drink or consume raw milk products. Officials say that pasteurization inactivates the virus. <\/p>\n<p>Several states have recently changed laws to legalize raw milk products, including Iowa, Louisiana and Delaware \u2014 which all changed laws this spring allowing for wider consumer access.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, President-elect Donald Trump\u2019s nomination for Health and Human Services, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., is a vocal proponent of raw milk <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RobertKennedyJr\/status\/1849925311586238737?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1849925311586238737%7Ctwgr%5Ea49fe8e5814931b630362503fba9a11279060b66%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nytimes.com%2F2024%2F11%2F12%2Fhealth%2Frobert-kennedy-jr-fda.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">and has said he wants to increase people\u2019s access to unpasteurized milk. <\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Raw Farm recall notice requests that stores remove the product from its shelves, and urges consumers to return the product to the store from which it was purchased for a free replacement or refund.<\/p>\n<p>McAfee said it is unlikely any of the product remains on store shelves.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s all gone,\u201d he said. \u201cWe take back anything that doesn\u2019t sell after seven days.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The virus has shown up in wastewater sites across Santa Clara County, including Palo Alto, San Jose, Gilroy and Sunnyvale.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s also been detected in 24 of the 28 California wastewater systems tested by WastewaterScan \u2014 an infectious disease monitoring network led by researchers at Stanford, Emory University, with lab testing partner Verily, Alphabet Inc.\u2019s life sciences organization.<\/p>\n<p>We are living in a \u201cvery highly charged time for raw milk,\u201d McAfee said. \u201cIt\u2019s all over the news with RFK announcing he wants raw milk for everyone to improve the immunity and gut microbiome for America.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur mission is to nourish our consumers with the highest quality raw milk and that is what we are doing,\u201d he said, citing his testing protocol and history with the state\u2019s agriculture department.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n     data-ad-layout-key=\"-fb+5w+4e-db+86\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"7910942971\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script><br \/>\n<br \/><div data-type=\"_mgwidget\" data-widget-id=\"1660802\">\r\n<\/div>\r\n<script>(function(w,q){w[q]=w[q]||[];w[q].push([\"_mgc.load\"])})(window,\"_mgq\");\r\n<\/script>\r\n<br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/environment\/story\/2024-11-24\/bird-flu-detected-in-california-raw-milk\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>State health officials said Sunday that bird flu virus was detected in a retail sample of raw milk from the Fresno-based Raw Farm dairy.
