Elena Lasconi of the Save <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/romania\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Romania<\/a> Union party, or USR, stood at about 18%, and George Simion, the leader of the far-right Alliance for the Unity of Romanians, or AUR, took about 14%.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">After polls closed, 9.4 million people \u2013 about 52.4% of eligible voters \u2013 had cast ballots, according to the Central Election Bureau. He outperformed most local surveys, sending shock waves through Romania\u2019s political establishment as he ascended to pole position.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">After casting his ballot on Sunday, Georgescu said in a post on Facebook that he voted \u201cFor the unjust, for the humiliated, for those who feel they do not matter and actually matter the most \u2026 the vote is a prayer for the nation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Cristian Andrei, a political consultant based in Bucharest, told The Associated Press that Georgescu\u2019s unexpected poll performance appears to be a \u201clarge protest or revolt against the establishment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">\u201cThe mainstream political parties have lost the connection with regular Romanians,\u201d he said. \u201cYou don\u2019t have strong candidates or strong leaders \u2026 there are weak candidates, weak leaders, and the parties in general are pretty much disconnected.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Georgescu lacks an agenda, Andrei said, and has a vague and populist manifesto with positions that are \u201cbeyond the normal discourse.\u201d His stances include supporting Romanian farmers, reducing dependency on imports, and ramping up energy and food production.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Georgescu has called Nato\u2019s ballistic missile defense shield in the Romanian town of Deveselu a \u201cshame of diplomacy\u201d. He has said the North Atlantic alliance will not protect any of its members should they be attacked by Russia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">According to his website, Georgescu holds a doctorate in pedology, a branch of soil science, and held different positions in Romania\u2018s environment ministry in the 1990s.
