The state&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2024\/11\/20\/susan-smith-parole-hearing\/76434185007\/\" data-t-l=\":b|e|k|${u}\" class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\">parole board denied a request<\/a> for release from prison by Susan Smith, convicted in 1995 of drowning her two young boys in a high-profile case that caused astonishment over a mother killing her own children.<\/p>\n<aside aria-label=\"advertisement\" class=\"gnt_m gnt_x gnt_x__lbl gnt_x__al\"\/>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Peery, whose sentencing was continued to Dec. 3, was driving five girls in her van on Topeka&#8217;s I-335 as they headed to a Girl Scouts event Oct. 8, 2022. Two of the children were injured but survived, including her younger daughter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Peery&#8217;s lawyers have asked Shawnee County District Judge Jessica Heinen for a &#8220;non-prison sanction,&#8221; saying she&#8217;s enduring mental health issues that would be <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/local\/2024\/11\/06\/topeka-mom-seeks-probation-for-mental-health-after-girl-scout-deaths\/76054669007\/\" data-t-l=\":b|e|k|${u}\" class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\">better treated outside prison<\/a>. Peery&#8217;s supporters also say her two living children <a href=\"https:\/\/www.change.org\/p\/we-ask-for-mercy-on-behalf-of-amber-peery\" data-t-l=\":b|z|k|${u}\" class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\">would benefit<\/a> from her presence at home.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"gnt_em gnt_em_anc\" id=\"gnt_atomsnc\" data-g-r=\"lazy\" data-gl-method=\"loadAnc\" aria-label=\"Newsletter signup form\"\/>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Families of the victims are pursuing a tougher sentence.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"gnt_ar_b_h2\">What Amber Peery said in jailhouse calls<\/h2>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">At one point during the jail calls, Peery said, &#8220;I wish I would have taken a plea.&#8221; She appeared to say that she rejected an offer from prosecutors to plead guilty to two counts of involuntary manslaughter in exchange for dropping the third count.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"gnt_em gnt_em_img\"><img class=\"gnt_em_img_i\" style=\"height:373px\" fetchpriority=\"high\" data-g-r=\"lazy\" data-gl-src=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/gcdn\/presto\/2022\/10\/11\/NTCJ\/0280c8c4-c90e-4f5c-bc16-7287da0ebc02-Kylie_Lund.jpeg?width=660&amp;height=373&amp;fit=crop&amp;format=pjpg&amp;auto=webp\" data-gl-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/gcdn\/presto\/2022\/10\/11\/NTCJ\/0280c8c4-c90e-4f5c-bc16-7287da0ebc02-Kylie_Lund.jpeg?width=1320&amp;height=746&amp;fit=crop&amp;format=pjpg&amp;auto=webp 2x\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Kylie Lund, 9, was one of three girls killed in a weekend car crash on I-335 a few miles south of Topeka.\"\/><\/figure>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">In a September call, Peery said the semi driver &#8220;should have seen my (expletive) blinker and braked.&#8221; She said she never saw the truck. &#8220;I literally didn&#8217;t know what (expletive) hit me,&#8221; she said. &#8220;I thought a bomb went off.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">In another call, she suggested her own vehicle was faulty in how it took the impact. &#8220;Everyone pinned this (expletive) (expletive) on me,&#8221; Peery said.<\/p>\n<aside aria-label=\"advertisement\" class=\"gnt_m gnt_x gnt_x__lbl gnt_x__al\"\/>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">At one point, Peery weighed how the convictions would impact her chances of getting custody of her children.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">&#8220;Kansas likes to keep families together. I got in a car accident&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Peery paced around the jail room and blamed the Kansas Highway Patrol for what she considered a shoddy investigation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">&#8220;Everything just went toward me,&#8221; Peery said. &#8220;It&#8217;s not fair. It&#8217;s just not.&#8221;<\/p>\n<aside aria-label=\"advertisement\" class=\"gnt_m gnt_x gnt_x__lbl gnt_x__al\"\/>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">She also blamed the truck driver and made it sound like having her blinker light on negated her culpability in the illegal U-turn. It was an accident. I didn&#8217;t kill three children. I got in a car accident.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"gnt_ar_b_h2\">What happened in deadly Topeka Girl Scouts crash?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Peery was driving the children as part of a three-vehicle caravan heading to a Girl Scouts event in Tonganoxie, about 35 miles away, but she and the other drivers took the wrong ramp to the Kansas Turnpike at the south Topeka interchange. The southbound lanes have no off-ramps or legal turnaround spots for 30 miles, so the trio of drivers made illegal U-turns through an opening in the turnpike barrier wall.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">The first two vehicles made it through safely. That day also would have been the 11th birthday of one of the victims, Kylie Lunn.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Killed in the wreck were Kylie, who was 9; Laila El Azri, who was also 9; and 8-year-old Brooklyn Peery, the daughter of Peery.
