(AP) \u2014 Service workers at Charlotte Douglas International Airport have gone on strike during <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/thanksgiving-holiday-travel-airports-roads-38cfcfe5f9d7b19fdc9d843827ed21f9\">a busy week of Thanksgiving travel<\/a><\/span> to protest what they say are unlivable wages.<\/p>\n<p>Employees of ABM and Prospect Airport Services <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/charlotte-airport-workers-strike-thanksgiving-26f769cbb47f06f191e928ac4b4b2ad6\">cast ballots Friday<\/a><\/span> to authorize the work stoppage in North Carolina, which a spokesperson said began Monday morning. <\/p>\n<p>Officials with Service Employees International Union announced the impending strike in a statement early Monday, saying the workers would demand \u201can end to poverty wages and respect on the job during the holiday travel season.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>ABM and Prospect Airport Services contract with American Airlines to provide services including cleaning airplane interiors, removing trash and escorting passengers in wheelchairs.<\/p>\n<p>Workers say they previously raised the alarm about their growing inability to afford basic necessities, including food and housing. They described living paycheck to paycheck, unable to cover expenses like car repairs while performing jobs that keep countless planes running on schedule.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re on strike today because this is our last resort.
