Rather than prolonging the lives of the rich elite, their money would be better spent on the world\u2019s 5 million children who die of hunger and from other preventable, treatable causes every year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSilicon Valley\u2019s dogged pursuit of the fountain of youth is a fear-led, ego-driven folly that comes at a terrible humanitarian cost to the planet and to its most vulnerable inhabitants,\u201d said Cleary, the author of \u201cElixir,\u201d a novel that explores the damaging consequences of life-extending drugs on society.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Phil Cleary, the founder of the SmartWater Group said Silicon Valley moguls should \u201cquit playing God\u201d in their race to conquer death, calling the quest for the holy grail of medicine \u201cego-driven.\u201d <span class=\"credit\">Palamedes &amp; Belters News \/ SWNS<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cA pill that keeps people alive, even by a few decades, would create an unjust, inequitable world packed with posh, privileged zombies \u2014 predominately white, middle-class folk who could afford to buy the drugs in the first place.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe billionaires behind this dangerous research should therefore quit playing God and reevaluate what \u2018life\u2019 really means.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKeeping children alive until at least their 18th birthday is unquestionably more important to humanity than extending the run of those privileged few who have already had the chance to see the world, to have children of their own, and to realize their own special ambitions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Around 100,000 people die from age-related diseases every day, according to the World Health Organization, yet scientists have long been divided about what causes aging and what, if anything, can be done about it.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Jeff Bezos has reportedly invested billions in a biotechnology company. <span class=\"credit\">Milan \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>While aging itself does not directly kill people, older people are at risk of many deadly diseases such as Alzheimer\u2019s, heart disease and cancer.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n\t<\/aside>\n<p>Some believe that <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2013\/08\/22\/looking-older-blame-moms-genes\/\">mitochondria<\/a> \u2014 the cell batteries \u2014 could be responsible. Over time, these are thought to produce unstable compounds which damage, or age, important molecules and proteins.<\/p>\n<p>Others <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2019\/03\/02\/science-has-figured-out-how-to-freeze-the-aging-process\/\">believe aging may be caused by \u201csenescent,\u201d<\/a> or older cells that are not cleared out by the body\u2019s waste system as they become dormant.<\/p>\n<p>But anti-aging research is progressing rapidly as scientists seek to uncover and control the molecular processes of aging.<\/p>\n<p>In July, researchers at MRC Laboratory of Medical Science at Imperial College London and Duke-NUS Medical School in Singapore announced the discovery of a new drug that increased the lifespans of laboratory mice by nearly 25%.<\/p>\n<p>Dozens of high-profile businessmen have thrown their weight and money behind biotechnology startups that are specifically focused on extending the human lifespan.<\/p>\n<div class=\"single__inline-module inline-module inline-module--newsletter aligncenter aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-newsletter\">\n<div class=\"inline-module__inner\">\n<div class=\"inline-module__title-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"inline-module__unsubmitted-title-wrapper\">\n<h3 class=\"inline-module__title headline headline--combo-sm-md\">\n\t\t\t\t\tGet the latest breakthroughs in medicine, diet &amp; nutrition tips and more.\t\t\t\t<\/h3>\n<p class=\"inline-module__cta\">\n\t\t\t\t\tSubscribe to our weekly Post Care newsletter!\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><h3 class=\"inline-module__title headline headline--combo-sm-md\">\n\t\t\t\t\tThanks for signing up!\t\t\t\t<\/h3>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Jeff Bezos is reported to have invested $3 billion \u2014 the biggest biotechnology company launch of all time \u2014 in <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2021\/09\/07\/jeff-bezos-invests-in-anti-aging-startup-altos-labs\/\">Altos Labs<\/a>, while PayPal co-founder Peter Thiel invested in the Methuselah Foundation, which has the goal of making \u201c90 the new 50.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n\t<\/aside>\n<p>And in April last year, ChatGPT founder <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2023\/12\/20\/business\/sam-altman-backed-startup-vows-to-extend-human-lives-by-10-years\/\">Sam Altman was revealed to have funded biotech startup Retro BioScience<\/a> to the tune of $180 million.<\/p>\n<p>According to its website, Retro BioScience focuses on \u201ccellular reprogramming\u201d and is less than four years away from developing a clinical proof-of-concept.<\/p>\n<p>Cleary, whose SmartWater technology is used by more than 2 million people in over 20 countries worldwide, accepted that life-extending medication would benefit many people whose lives would otherwise be cut short due to terminal illness.<\/p>\n<p>But he warned that drugs with such power would only be sold at a premium, meaning that most of the world\u2019s population could never afford them.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"> <span class=\"credit\">Palamedes &amp; Belters News \/ SWNS<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cBefore extending the lives of the privileged few, surely mankind must first focus on extending the lives, if only for a few years, of the millions of children who die of starvation,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Theologian Dr. Niamh Middleton of the University of Dublin agreed and said humanity \u201ccould be lost forever\u201d if Silicon Valley succeeded in its goal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAside from the many religious arguments, God\u2019s divine plan among them, I would think it safe to say that humanity could be lost forever as we know if life-extending drugs are brought to the market by private companies for commercial gain,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn our pursuit of extending life, let us first turn our attention to the most vulnerable among us.
