(Courtesy: NASA \/ ESA \/ STScI \/ Jian-Yang Li (PSI) \/ Joseph DePasquale (STScI))<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">For about two months, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/earth-space\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Earth<\/a> had a temporary second moon from an asteroid that scientists believe originated from our only <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/moon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Moon<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">According to a\u00a0study published in September, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/earth-space\/new-mini-moon-orbit-earth-this-fall\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">asteroid 2024 PT5<\/a> had a horseshoe-like orbit from Sept. 29 until Nov. 25, when it was temporarily captured into Earth&#8217;s orbit.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">On Monday, the asteroid left its &#8220;mini-moon&#8221; phase with Earth as its path moved farther from our planet. However, for this near-Earth object (NEO), it&#8217;s not goodbye, but see you later.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">The study authors said that the 2024 asteroid PT5 will briefly approach a deep-space orbit of Earth in January before leaving the neighborhood again. Earlier this year, scientists said they know <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/earth-space\/earth-satellite-asteroid-kamooalewa-moon-crater\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">which crater on the Moon Kamo\u2019oalewa was likely created from<\/a> on the far side of the lunar surface.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">When 2024 PT5 returns in January, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/astronomy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">astronomers<\/a> will again be able to observe the asteroid and learn more about it with ground-based telescopes and radar.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">It&#8217;s likely that many more asteroids created from impacts on the Moon have yet to be discovered.
