Dunlap explores New York Times history through artifacts housed in the Museum of The Times.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Vaccines are an indispensable news gathering tool. They permit reporters to travel to areas where fatal or debilitating diseases are prevalent; exactly the places that warrant coverage by The New York Times.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">That\u2019s why the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/10\/22\/insider\/high-above-the-newsroom-a-history-of-the-times.html\" title=\"\">Museum at The Times<\/a> displays a carton that once contained the vaccine Ixiaro. It prevents <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/japanese-encephalitis\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Japanese encephalitis<\/a>, which is related to yellow fever, dengue and West Nile virus. Mosquitoes spread the disease. It is considered endemic in much of Southeast Asia and the Western Pacific region.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThe symptoms can be anything from a mild fever to, in rare cases, seizures and death,\u201d <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/by\/donald-g-mcneil-jr\" title=\"\">Donald G. McNeil Jr.<\/a> wrote in an email last week. \u201cThere\u2019s no treatment. The vaccine isn\u2019t recommended for most travelers to Asia, but if you go to rural areas and sleep in rooms with no A.C. or window screens \u2014 as I sometimes did \u2014 it\u2019s protection.\u201d He donated the Ixiaro carton the museum.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. McNeil is the author of \u201c<a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.simonandschuster.com\/books\/The-Wisdom-of-Plagues\/Donald-G-McNeil\/9781668001394\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">The Wisdom of Plagues: Lessons From 25 Years of Covering Pandemics<\/a>\u201d and is a frequent contributor to the website <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/donaldgmcneiljr1954.medium.com\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Medium<\/a>. He worked for The Times from 1976 to 2021, covering many infectious diseases, most recently Covid-19.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Many of his Times assignments took him to tropical areas. In 2014, aware that new vaccines had been approved by the Food and Drug Administration, he went to the New York Center for Travel and Tropical Medicine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cShoot me up with everything,\u201d Mr. McNeil said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Five jabs followed: Ixiaro; RabAvert, for rabies; Typhim Vi, for typhoid; a booster shot of a vaccine for tetanus, diphtheria and whooping cough; and probably an inactivated polio vaccine. (The clinic didn\u2019t enter the fifth injection on Mr. McNeil\u2019s yellow vaccine record card.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI don\u2019t remember any bad side effects,\u201d Mr. McNeil wrote. \u201cThe worst side effect I\u2019ve ever had from a shot was from my second shingles shot \u2014 and all it did was make me feel sort of nauseous and flu-ish and I went to bed without supper. I\u2019ve been very lucky that way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThe rabies shot was one of those \u2018it wouldn\u2019t hurt to have it\u2019 decisions. I\u2019m not a dog cuddler, and I definitely don\u2019t pet strays. But they\u2019re often <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2001\/03\/02\/world\/bucharest-journal-in-a-city-gone-to-the-dogs-bardot-s-on-the-case.html\" title=\"\">hanging around in poor countries<\/a>, and I did have to get up close to <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/06\/18\/health\/guinea-worms-dogs-chad.html\" title=\"\">village dogs in rural Chad<\/a> for a piece on how Guinea worm, a human parasite, was establishing a reservoir in dogs.
