I love my colleague David Pierce, but he is hideously wrong about basically every productivity tool because he insists on using a computer. At this point, we have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article\/why-writing-by-hand-is-better-for-memory-and-learning\/\">multiple studies showing<\/a> that writing by hand is better for learning and memory. You want to remember something? Write, don\u2019t type.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">And now we will continue with what Altman is doing wrong: most of the rest of it. I am not the world\u2019s biggest fan of spiral-bound notebooks, but if you are going to use them, I recommend <a href=\"https:\/\/fieldnotesbrand.com\/products\/frontpage\">a reporter\u2019s notebook<\/a>. Besides lying flat, a top-bound reporter\u2019s notebook is sized such that you can easily hold it in one hand and write with the other \u2014\u00a0making it much more convenient and portable than the one Altman is holding, which looks like an A6. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component clear-both block md:float-left md:mr-30 md:w-[320px] lg:-ml-100\">\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-pullquote mb-20\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup relative bg-repeating-lines-dark bg-[length:1px_1.2em] pb-8 font-polysans text-28 font-medium leading-120 tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20  dark:bg-repeating-lines-light dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple\">I do not rip pages out of my notebook regularly because I am not deranged<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">The only real advantage the A6 has is that it might be easier to put in a pocket, which Altman notes as an important quality. I say \u201cmight be\u201d because I don\u2019t wear men\u2019s clothes \u2014 and women\u2019s pockets are notoriously small or nonexistent. I have spent more time than I care to think about focusing on pockets in my clothing because <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2023\/5\/20\/23730130\/apple-iphone-13-mini-apple-phones\">these fucking phones are too big<\/a>. But if you can fit a full-size phone in your pocket, I\u2019m pretty sure you can get a reporter\u2019s notebook in there. There are some other solutions, too. Obviously, a bag. There are also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.glamour.com\/gallery\/how-to-wear-wide-leg-pants\">Katherine Hepburn-style trousers<\/a>, which are in fashion at the moment and have large, capacious pockets. The third possible solution is a shirt jacket, which frequently also feature large pockets. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">What Altman is talking about here \u2014 writing stuff down, tearing it out of the notebook, crumpling it up when you\u2019re done, and throwing it on the floor so someone else will pick it up \u2014 is disposable writing. You can fuss about paper quality when it comes to this type of writing, as he does, but if that\u2019s less important to you, you might consider <a href=\"https:\/\/www.43folders.com\/2004\/09\/03\/introducing-the-hipster-pda\">a stack of index cards held together with a rubber band or binder clip.<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">The things spiral notebooks have going for them is that they do truly lie flat, and they are fairly cheap. If I am not using a reporter\u2019s notebook, I spring for thread binding, which also lies flat: Leuchtturm1917, either <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leuchtturm1917.us\/classic-notebooks-1.html\">B5<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leuchtturm1917.us\/notebooks\/all-formats\/medium-a5\/\">A5<\/a>. I do not rip pages out of my notebook regularly because I am not deranged. For those of you who do feel ripping pages out is important, you might consider <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leuchtturm1917.us\/notepad.html\">a notebook with micro-perforations<\/a> \u2014\u00a0it\u2019s less mess.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">I am not going to fuss too much about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gentlemanstationer.com\/blog\/2021\/3\/10\/hierarchies-of-fountain-pen-friendly-paper\">high-quality paper<\/a> because if you are the kind of person who cares about this, you already have strong feelings about Tomoe River vs. Rhodia vs. Clairefontaine. Altman recommends <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/uni-ball-Roller-Micro-Point-0-5mm\/dp\/B00006IE8P?tag=theverge02-20\">the Uni-Ball Micro 0.5<\/a>, which made me hiss. The other Altman recommendation is the \u201cMuji 0.36 or 0.37\u201d in dark blue ink. After some exploration on the Muji site, I think what he means is the <a href=\"https:\/\/go.skimresources.com\/?id=1025X1701640&amp;xs=1&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.muji.us%2Fcollections%2Fpen-pencils%2Fproducts%2Fgel-ink-cap-type-ballpoint-pen-0-38mm-8a63%3F_pos%3D3%26_fid%3D30017cb59%26_ss%3Dc\">Muji Gel Ink Cap Ballpoint Pen in 0.38mm<\/a>. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">Perhaps he simply doesn\u2019t write by hand as much as I do, which is one explanation. (I have spent entire days in courtrooms taking notes by hand, which I expect is not a part of his job brief.) But if you are doing a lot of hand-writing, you want something that will glide effortlessly on the page \u2014 otherwise your hand will cramp. They are a hand cramp waiting to happen. Ballpoint pens just don\u2019t glide as well, which means you really have to exert effort to get a ballpoint across the page, especially if it\u2019s cheap. That\u2019s what\u2019s making your hand hurt. If you are a lefty and concerned about smears, use something with a quick-drying ink like the<a href=\"https:\/\/go.skimresources.com\/?id=1025X1701640&amp;xs=1&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.jetpens.com%2FZebra-Sarasa-Dry-Gel-Pens%2Fct%2F3703\"> Zebra Sarasa<\/a>. Love yourself.
