Humphries, the news chief at NASA\u2019s Johnson Space Center in Houston.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3xrn12800053b6m1fwvzwm5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The uncrewed <a href=\"https:\/\/ntrs.nasa.gov\/api\/citations\/20150012224\/downloads\/20150012224.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Progress capsule<\/a> \u2014 which can carry science experiments, propellant, food and other supplies to the ISS \u2014 runs on a fuel called unsymmetric-dimethylhydrazine and an oxidizer called nitrogen tetroxide. Both are highly toxic to humans. But Humphries confirmed propellants do not appear to be the cause of the issue.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3xrn12800063b6mdhbqyd5l@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cOutgassing\u201d is a <a href=\"https:\/\/spinoff.nasa.gov\/Spinoff2017\/ip_8.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">phenomenon<\/a> that can occur as manmade objects leave the protective bubble of Earth\u2019s atmosphere and enter the radiation-riddled environment of space, where temperatures can also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amu.apus.edu\/area-of-study\/science\/resources\/why-is-space-not-always-cold\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">range<\/a> from 250 to minus 250 degrees Fahrenheit (121 to minus 158 degrees Celsius).\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3xrn12800073b6mji8zlp5q@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The potentially outgassing \u201cmaterials\u201d NASA referred to were inside the Progress capsule did not involve fuel, Humphries said via email.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3xrn12800083b6mxhj4gdmu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cFor any detailed information on what caused the unusual odor, please contact (Russian space agency) Roscosmos,\u201d Humphries said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3xrn12800093b6mvife4pze@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Roscosmos did not respond to an emailed request for comment.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3xrn128000a3b6mxigs8sju@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            NASA said in its Sunday statement that, after the Russian cosmonauts noticed the odor, they shut down the hatch that connects the 16-foot-long and 8.4-foot-wide <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/international-space-station\/poisk-mini-research-module-2-yezof\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Poisk module<\/a> to the rest of the space station.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3xrn128000b3b6m0n32qrro@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Then, flight controllers on the ground \u201cactivated air scrubbing equipment as part of normal procedures, indicating that the odor likely was outgassing from materials inside the Progress spacecraft,\u201d according to NASA\u2019s statement to CNN.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3xrn128000c3b6mvqooy3lv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe crew reported the odor dissipated quickly and cargo transfer operations are proceeding on schedule,\u201d the statement noted, indicating that the cosmonauts were able to access the supplies stowed on board the Progress vehicle, despite the earlier reported smell.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3xrn128000d3b6m2p3419i1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In a separate <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Space_Station\/status\/1860798995905540336\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a> posted to social media on Sunday, NASA also noted that \u201cair scrubbers and contaminant sensors\u201d confirmed that \u201cair quality inside the space station (was)  at normal levels.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3xrn128000e3b6mr123346t@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Progress vehicle \u2014 one in a long series of resupply ships that have visited both the Russian and NASA-controlled portions of the space station \u2014 arrived at the ISS after launching from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan on November 21. It carried \u201cnearly three tons of food, fuel, and supplies,\u201d according to NASA.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3xrn128000f3b6msj4tfht0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            While the unexpected odor and temporary shutdown of the Poisk hatch appears to have been a brief and isolated incident, it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/11\/15\/science\/international-space-station-leak-nasa-russia\/index.html\">adds to a years-long saga<\/a> related to a separate Russian-controlled module on the ISS, called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/11\/15\/science\/international-space-station-leak-nasa-russia\/index.html\">Zvezda<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3xrn128000g3b6mdd0zz52z@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            That segment has been mostly closed because of a slow air leak. Cosmonauts only enter the module to unload cargo from visiting spacecraft, according to NASA.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3xrn128000h3b6mcqdthf8z@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The space station has hosted rotating crews of cosmonauts and astronauts \u2014 hailing from more than 20 countries \u2014 since the year 2000 in separate but connected Russian and US sections.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3xrn128000i3b6mru0sscpr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            NASA hopes to continue operating the ISS with its five partner agencies through at least 2030.
