But it quickly pared back some of its losses, as investors tried to make sense of the mixed results along with the company\u2019s reassurance that the employee error, which Macy\u2019s said spanned the fourth quarter of 2021 through the most recent quarter, did not affect its cash flow management or vendor payments.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Macy\u2019s sales in the third quarter fell 2.4 percent \u2014 below analysts\u2019 expectations \u2014 to $4.74 billion. The company\u2019s overall sales were dragged down by weak performance at Macy\u2019s stores and its digital business.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But sales at 50 locations that represent the company\u2019s future \u2014 based on geography, staffing and other factors \u2014 rose 1.9 percent, the third consecutive quarter of growth. And comparable sales rose at both Bloomingdale\u2019s and Bluemercury, the company\u2019s luxury brands.
