He said of his approach to game two, &#8220;With Black so early in the match it\u2019s not close to a must-win, so I was not going to do anything stupid\u2014I just wanted to play a good game.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"surprises\"\/>Ding Lands The Opening Surprises<\/h2>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/images.chesscomfiles.com\/uploads\/v1\/images_users\/tiny_mce\/Colin_McGourty\/phpti0MOL.jpg\" style=\"display: block; margin: 0 auto; aspect-ratio:800\/533\" class=\"imageUploaderImg img-defer img-defer-placeholder\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\"\/>&#13;<figcaption class=\"figcaption\">Ding Liren&#8217;s 1.e4 was already a minor opening surprise. Photo: Maria Emelianova\/Chess.com.<\/figcaption>&#13;<br \/>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Ding dropped a hint in his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chess.com\/news\/view\/ding-liren-rapport-interview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pre-match interview<\/a> with FM <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chess.com\/players\/mike-klein\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mike Klein<\/a> when he noted that his second GM <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chess.com\/players\/richard-rapport\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Richard Rapport<\/a> gave him &#8220;some interesting ideas that I can use if the match is heating up.&#8221; The last match against GM <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chess.com\/players\/ian-nepomniachtchi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ian Nepomniachtchi<\/a> started white-hot for Ding, since he fell behind after game two, and would keep falling behind and needing to hit back, which may have been why we got to see so many wild ideas from Rapport&#8217;s laboratory. Going for a risky pawn sacrifice wasn&#8217;t in the game plan.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Instead we got <strong>14.Rdc1<\/strong>, after which the black knight came to d4 and Ding was questioning his life choices. He commented:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I thought I misplayed good opening preparation and I may be slightly worse in the middlegame. I\u2019m not sure if my assessment was correct or not\u2014it might be inaccurate.
