The agency added on Monday that the odor &#8220;likely was outgassing from materials inside the cargo spacecraft,&#8221; but did not offer more specifics.<\/p>\n<p>As is standard practice, air scrubbers and contaminant sensors on the ISS &#8220;monitored the station&#8217;s atmosphere&#8221; and flight controllers said the air quality of the ISS &#8220;was at normal levels,&#8221; NASA officials said in an initial post on the matter <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Space_Station\/status\/1860798995905540336\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Space_Station\/status\/1860798995905540336\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"noopener\">on X<\/a>, formerly Twitter, on Sunday (Nov. 24).<\/p>\n<p>Cosmonauts working in the Poisk module, where the Progress spacecraft is docked, briefly wore extra protective equipment as a precaution, stated Anatoly Zak of <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.russianspaceweb.com\/progress-ms-29.html#docking\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.russianspaceweb.com\/progress-ms-29.html#docking\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"noopener\">RussianSpaceWeb.<\/a> Zak was monitoring the communications between Mission Control in Houston and the ISS on Saturday.<\/p>\n<div id=\"slice-container-newsletterForm-articleInbodyContent-PbB4DFHuXqUm7da4jzW3uh\" class=\"slice-container newsletter-inbodyContent-slice newsletterForm-articleInbodyContent-PbB4DFHuXqUm7da4jzW3uh slice-container-newsletterForm\">\n<div data-hydrate=\"true\" class=\"newsletter-form__wrapper newsletter-form__wrapper--inbodyContent\">\n<div class=\"newsletter-form__container\">\n<section class=\"newsletter-form__top-bar\"\/>\n<section class=\"newsletter-form__main-section\">\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">Breaking space news, the latest updates on rocket launches, skywatching events and more!<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The hatch between the Russian side and U.S. side of the ISS is usually closed these days. For the past five years, there has been an <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/iss-leak-safety-risk-nasa-oig-report\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/iss-leak-safety-risk-nasa-oig-report\">ongoing air leak <\/a>on the Russian side. NASA and its Russian counterpart, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22724-roscosmos.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22724-roscosmos.html\">Roscosmos<\/a>, continue to troubleshoot the leak, which poses no immediate risk to the ISS astronauts or station operations, NASA has stressed.<\/p>\n<p>That said, the agencies \u2014 the chief partners in ISS operations \u2014 <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/international-space-station\/the-iss-has-been-leaking-for-5-years-nasa-and-russia-disagree-on-how-to-fix-it\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/international-space-station\/the-iss-has-been-leaking-for-5-years-nasa-and-russia-disagree-on-how-to-fix-it\">disagree as to the leak&#8217;s cause<\/a> and remedy. They also dispute how much of a risk the leak poses to the ISS over the long term.<\/p>\n<p>The Progress will stay at the ISS for several months after its unloading. The crew will fill the spacecraft with trash and unneeded items before the Progress departs, to naturally burn up in <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17683-earth-atmosphere.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17683-earth-atmosphere.html\">Earth&#8217;s atmosphere<\/a>, in 2025.<\/p>\n<p>There have been issues with Russian ships docked at the ISS not so long ago, but these were related to coolant. For example, a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/40951-soyuz-spacecraft.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/40951-soyuz-spacecraft.html\">Soyuz crewed spacecraft<\/a> leaked so much coolant in December 2022 that Roscosmos eventually sent up a replacement for its three-astronaut crew, doubling the astronauts&#8217; six-month stay to a year.
