Liman responded by saying he\u2019s not going to let the former New York City mayor and onetime presidential candidate blurt things out anymore in court unless he\u2019s a sworn witness.<\/p>\n<p>The interruption to an otherwise routine pretrial hearing in Manhattan came as the judge questioned Giuliani\u2019s lawyer about why Giuliani has not yet provided the title to a car he has relinquished in his effort to satisfy <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/giuliani-2020-election-georgia-defamation-moss-freeman-6f6446c4f5224f521db8ff7763fb12d1\">a $148 million defamation judgment<\/a><\/span> won by two former Georgia election workers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour client was the U.S. attorney for this district,\u201d the judge said, referring to Giuliani\u2019s years in the 1980s as the head of the federal prosecutor\u2019s office in the Southern District of New York, as he suggested it was hard to believe that Giuliani was incapable of getting a duplicate title to the car.<\/p>\n<div class=\"AudioEnhancement\" data-separate-event=\"audioModule\" data-separate-value=\"AP AUDIO: Rudy Giuliani draws rebuke for a courtroom outburst accusing judge in assets case of being unfair\" data-module=\"\" data-gtm-region=\"AP AUDIO: Rudy Giuliani draws rebuke for a courtroom outburst accusing judge in assets case of being unfair\" data-align-center=\"\">\n<p>    <a class=\"AnchorLink\" id=\"ap-audio-rudy-giuliani-draws-rebuke-for-a-courtroom-outburst-accusing-judge-in-assets-case-of-being-unfair\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"AudioEnhancement-description\">AP correspondent Julie Walker reports Rudy Giuliani was back in court Tuesday, trying to shield some of his assets from the penalties in his defamation case.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Giuliani learned forward and began speaking into a microphone, telling the judge he had applied for a duplicate copy of the car\u2019s title but that it had not yet arrived.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe implication I\u2019ve been not diligent about it is totally incorrect,\u201d Giuliani said in a scolding tone. \u201cThe implication you make is against me and every implication against me is wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Giuliani went on: \u201cI\u2019m not impoverished. Everything I have is tied up. I don\u2019t have a car. I don\u2019t have a credit card. I don\u2019t have cash. I can\u2019t get to bank accounts that truly would be mine because they have put &#8230; stop orders on, for example, my Social Security account, which they have no right to do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Liman responded by warning defense lawyers that the next time Giuliani interrupts a hearing, \u201che\u2019s not going to be permitted to speak and the court will take action.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The judge said Giuliani could either choose to represent himself or let lawyers do so, but \u201cyou can\u2019t have hybrid representation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If Giuliani wants to speak in court again, he can be put on the witness stand and be sworn as a witness, Liman added.<\/p>\n<p>The exchange came at a hearing in which the judge refused to delay a Jan. 16 trial over the disposition of Giuliani\u2019s Florida residence and World Series rings.<\/p>\n<p>Those are two sets of assets that Giuliani is trying to shield from confiscation as part of <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/giuliani-defamation-georgia-election-workers-799b168fe2fa52a3b59aca2034a816f1\">Liman\u2019s order<\/a><\/span> to turn over many prized possessions to the poll workers.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier in the proceeding, defense attorney Joseph M. Cammarata asked Liman to delay the trial, which will be heard without a jury, for a month because of Giuliani\u2019s \u201cinvolvement\u201d in inauguration planning for President-elect Donald Trump.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy client regularly consults and deals directly with President-elect Trump on issues that are taking place as the incoming administration is afoot as well as (the) inauguration,\u201d Cammarata said. \u201cMy client wants to exercise his political right to be there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The judge turned down the request, saying Giuliani\u2019s \u201csocial calendar\u201d was not a reason to postpone the trial.<\/p>\n<p>Giuliani, who once served as Trump\u2019s personal attorney, was found liable last year for defaming two Georgia poll workers by falsely accusing them of tampering with ballots during the 2020 presidential election.
