href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2023\/05\/25\/air-traffic-control-shortage-could-ruin-memorial-day-travel\/\">shortage of air traffic controllers<\/a> was causing \u201csignificant disruption\u201d for travelers at its busy Newark, NJ, hub outside of New York City.<\/p>\n<p>The airline said the Federal Aviation Administration has been forced to reduce traffic flows to Newark hub because of low staffing on 12 of the first 25 days of November, disrupting more than 343,000 United travelers by delays, cancellations, long taxi times and longer flight times related to air traffic control delays for Newark.<\/p>\n<p>United said that on Nov. 15 alone, air traffic control staffing issues resulted in canceled flights that disrupted 1,880 customers; gate and other delays disrupted an additional href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/11\/26\/us-news\/more-than-18m-americans-to-travel-by-plane-this-thanksgiving\/\">record-setting Thanksgiving holiday air-travel period<\/a> is beginning.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>\u201cThis is why it continues to be imperative for FAA to rebuild staffing levels so travelers can depend on safe, efficient air travel,\u201d United said.<\/p>\n<p>Over the last two years,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2023\/12\/23\/news\/faa-identifies-19-serious-runway-incursions-this-year-report\/\">a series of near-miss incidents<\/a>\u00a0has raised concerns about US aviation safety and the strain on understaffed air traffic control operations. The FAA said\u00a0last month it was opening an audit\u00a0into runway incursion risks at the 45 busiest US airports after a series of near-miss incidents.<\/p>\n<p>The FAA\u00a0required 17 air traffic controllers\u00a0to move from New York Terminal Radar Approach Control (TRACON), known as N90, to Philadelphia in late July.
