{"id":130672,"date":"2024-11-27T13:42:45","date_gmt":"2024-11-27T06:42:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hotvideos24.online\/?p=130672"},"modified":"2024-11-27T13:42:45","modified_gmt":"2024-11-27T06:42:45","slug":"international-space-station-dodges-2nd-piece-of-space-junk-in-6-days","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hotvideos24.online\/?p=130672","title":{"rendered":"International Space Station dodges 2nd piece of space junk in 6 days"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n     data-ad-layout-key=\"-fb+5w+4e-db+86\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"7910942971\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"article-body\">\n<p>The International Space Station just dodged a piece of debris for the second time in less than a week.<\/p>\n<p>Russia&#8217;s robotic <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/russian-progress-89-cargo-ship-docks-at-space-station\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/russian-progress-89-cargo-ship-docks-at-space-station\">Progress 89 freighter<\/a>, which has been docked to the ISS since August, fired its thrusters for about 3.5 minutes on Monday morning (Nov. 25) to get the station clear of a hunk of <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/kessler-syndrome-space-debris\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/kessler-syndrome-space-debris\">space junk<\/a>.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"hawk-nest\" data-block-type=\"embed\" data-render-type=\"fte\" data-skip=\"dealsy\" data-widget-type=\"seasonal\"\/>\n<p>&#8220;The debris avoidance maneuver positioned the orbital outpost farther away from a satellite fragment nearing the station\u2019s flight path,&#8221; NASA officials wrote in an <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.nasa.gov\/spacestation\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/blogs.nasa.gov\/spacestation\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"noopener\">update on Monday<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The burn began at 4:49 a.m. EST (0949 GMT) and raised the station&#8217;s orbit by about 1,650 feet (500 meters), according to the Russian state-owned news agency <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/tass.com\/science\/1877101\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/tass.com\/science\/1877101\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"noopener\">TASS<\/a>, which cited a statement from the nation&#8217;s space agency <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22724-roscosmos.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22724-roscosmos.html\">Roscosmos<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/12725-russia-progress-cargo-spacecraft-infographic.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/12725-russia-progress-cargo-spacecraft-infographic.html\">Progress<\/a> 89 performed a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/international-space-station\/iss-fires-thrusters-to-dodge-hunk-of-space-junk\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/international-space-station\/iss-fires-thrusters-to-dodge-hunk-of-space-junk\">similar burn on Nov. 19<\/a>. That one lasted about 5.5 minutes and ensured that the ISS steered clear of a fragment from a &#8220;defunct defense meteorological satellite&#8221; that broke apart in 2015, NASA officials said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Related: <\/strong><a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/international-space-station-space-dodge-debris-how-often\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/international-space-station-space-dodge-debris-how-often\"><strong>How often does the International Space Station have to dodge space debris?<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/low-earth-orbit\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/low-earth-orbit\">Low Earth orbit<\/a>, where the space station flies, is getting more and more crowded these days. <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/Space_Safety\/Space_Debris\/Space_debris_by_the_numbers\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/Space_Safety\/Space_Debris\/Space_debris_by_the_numbers\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"noopener\">According to the European Space Agency<\/a> (ESA), about 10,200 active satellites circle the planet at the moment. ESA estimates that Earth orbit harbors about 40,500 objects at least 4 inches (10 centimeters) wide, 1.1 million pieces between 0.4 inches and 4 inches (1 to 10 cm) in diameter and 130 million that are at least 1 millimeter wide.<\/p>\n<p>Even these tiny shards can be dangerous to satellites or crewed craft like the ISS, given the tremendous speeds at which they travel. For example, at the station&#8217;s average altitude of 250 miles (400 kilometers), orbital velocity is about 17,500 mph (28,160 kph).<\/p>\n<p>Dodging debris isn&#8217;t a rare occurrence, as the events of the past week show.
