Get news about destinations, plus the latest in aviation, food and drink, and where to stay.<\/em>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n    <cite class=\"source__cite\"><br \/>\n      <span class=\"source__location\" data-editable=\"location\"\/><br \/>\n      <span class=\"source__text\" data-editable=\"source\">CNN<\/span><br \/>\n        \u00a0\u2014\u00a0<br \/>\n    <\/cite>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3veo4iz003j2cqm2xkw66kw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            As millions of Americans <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/11\/21\/travel\/faa-holiday-air-travel-staffing-shortages\/index.html\">take to the skies <\/a>over the Thanksgiving holiday this week, some will likely be searching for easy travel hacks to help make their journeys a little less painful.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3ves5w3000b3b6mh17pi6sp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Among the many flying tips making the rounds in recent years on TikTok, this one continues to pop up: how to get a full bottle of water through a US airport security checkpoint.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3ves5w3000c3b6mxm7go139@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Well, it turns out the answer is simple \u2014 freeze it, first.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3xthkt500053b6mgxb2xuax@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            No, you wouldn\u2019t be breaking any rules. The US Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is actually on board with this one.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3ves5w3000e3b6m3b00uet1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201c\u200bFrozen liquid items are allowed through the checkpoint as long as they are frozen solid when presented for screening,\u201d a TSA spokesperson confirmed to CNN by email.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3ves5w3000f3b6mdivqi1zn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIf frozen liquid items are partially melted, slushy or have any liquid at the bottom of the container, they must meet <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsa.gov\/travel\/security-screening\/liquids-aerosols-gels-rule\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">3-1-1 liquids<\/a> requirements,\u201d they added, referring to the TSA\u2019s rule that allows each passenger to bring liquids, gels and aerosols in containers that are less than 3.4 ounces or 100 milliliters and can all fit into a single quart-sized bag.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3ves5w3000g3b6mi29sqmic@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            What to do if your frozen bottle starts to melt? Drink it before you put your items into the security bin.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3xulz4q000e3b6m6o3bmh6c@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Just remember: this rule will also apply if you decide to fly home after family Thanksgiving with a bag of leftovers. Most would agree that slurping back a mouthful of partially melted gravy isn\u2019t going to be a pleasant pre-boarding experience.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3y5eefd000n3b6m1hs0f9kl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            And there are of course exceptions to the 3-1-1 rule \u2014 the TSA allows larger amounts of medically necessary liquids, gels and aerosols in carry-on luggage, and these need to be declared to officers at the security checkpoint for inspection.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3xwg4lr000j3b6mcbksu6p5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Ultimately, the best advice is to not pack any foods or frozen liquid items into your carry-on luggage that you would be upset to throw away.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3xuph7f000g3b6mrzxhfi3j@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe final decision rests with the TSA officer on whether an item is allowed through the checkpoint,\u201d reads the TSA website.\n    <\/p>\n<div surprisingly, some travelers just can\u2019t warm up to the thought of bringing frozen bottles through security.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3ves5w4000j3b6mifw4w2cq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Many who commented on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@countingcountries\/video\/7376394605903826218?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">popular TikTok videos<\/a> and blogs about the hack said they didn\u2019t see the point, given you can just take an empty bottle through security and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@bloomingdaley\/video\/7134011827024956715?q=airport%20security%20frozen%20water%20bottle&amp;t=1732587323054\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fill it up for free<\/a> at the widely available water dispensers most airports now offer in departure halls.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3ves5w4000k3b6mmr7i1lfl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Others couldn\u2019t imagine why someone would go to all that trouble just to avoid paying for a bottle of water on the other side, regardless of the inflated prices. A few even pointed out that the ice might melt too slowly for a passenger to even have time to drink it if they\u2019re on a short flight.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3ves5w4000l3b6mxrxsbyhf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Meanwhile, some travelers expressed surprise that this hack wasn\u2019t common knowledge;  the TSA has issued regular reminders on its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.threads.net\/@tsa\/post\/C67DnDDpfy_\/hmmm-might-just-bring-a-frozen-bottle-of-water-through-airport-security\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social media platforms<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3ves5w4000m3b6mt3oxuu0v@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Among the frequent flyers who feel the idea has its merits is aviation blogger John E. DiScala, aka <a href=\"https:\/\/johnnyjet.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Johnny Jet<\/a>, who has traveled over 100,000 miles a year since 1995 and visited over 100 countries.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3ves5w4000n3b6mp6z2c9zq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWhile I\u2019ve never personally brought a frozen water bottle through security, there are times when this travel hack makes sense,\u201d he told CNN.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3ves5w4000o3b6mu0frjcr2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cYes, you can always fill your bottle up post-security, which is what I always do. But sometimes, you can\u2019t find a refilling station, there\u2019s a long line or you just don\u2019t have enough time to do it before boarding. In these instances, it would be nice to already have your ice-cold water with you.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3ves5w4000p3b6mih8x61nx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            He also pointed to recent aviation disruptions as a reason to pop a bottle into the freezer before your flight.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3ves5w4000q3b6mwrh6m52c@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWater from a refilling station is fine but in extreme heat, nothing will beat ice-cold water,\u201d said DiScala.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3ves5w4000r3b6mlrsjh8pl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThis past summer, there were many stories about passengers stuck on delayed flights, sitting on the tarmac, who I\u2019m sure wished they had some cold water to drink to stay hydrated.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3ves5w4000s3b6mm6yyi2kq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            When asked if some travelers are motivated to bring frozen bottles through US airport security checkpoints simply for the thrill of outsmarting \u201cthe man,\u201d DiScala agreed that may be part of it, but stresses this trick really could come in handy.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3ves5w4000t3b6m8qhrz3ou@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cSure, people love travel hacks that make them feel like they\u2019re beating the system \u2014 like shoving an extra carry-on bag\u2019s worth of clothes into a travel pillow \u2014 but this one is not only easy and inexpensive but it could really help to keep you safe, hydrated and healthy,\u201d he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3ves5w4000u3b6m1wqpq04x@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI never like to be at the mercy of the flight attendants for water so it\u2019s always smart to be prepared and have your own.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3ves5w4000v3b6myey2y8y8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Travelers outside of the US should check what the policy is in the country they\u2019re departing from before going to the trouble of freezing their water bottles. Canada, for instance, isn\u2019t quite so chill.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3ves5w4000w3b6mx89ejbho@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Though the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.catsa-acsta.gc.ca\/en\/what-can-bring\/liquids-non-solid-food-personal-items\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Canadian Air Transport Security Authority<\/a> (CATSA) doesn\u2019t specifically mention frozen water bottles on its website, it does note that gel and ice packs are subject to 100 ml liquid restrictions, as are non-solid foods, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.catsa-acsta.gc.ca\/en\/what-can-bring\/liquids-non-solid-food-personal-items#section-6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">with some exceptions<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3z8h9ke00003b6mp5tikyt5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cFrozen liquids, such as ice, are permitted in quantities of 100 ml (3.4 oz) or less,\u201d says a post on the CATSA website.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3z9awqp00023b6mmsp5dkyy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cFood over 100 ml that is normally a liquid or gel but has been frozen solid will not be allowed to pass through security in your carry-on.
