href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/nasa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NASA<\/a> science flight was flying over the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/earth-space\/greenlands-ice-sheet-melting-turning-country-green\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Greenland ice sheet<\/a> this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/spring\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">spring<\/a>, a surprise popped up on a specialty radar: a hidden Cold War city more than 100 feet beneath the ice.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">In April 2024, a team of engineers and scientists were flying on NASA\u2019s Gulfstream III, testing NASA\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpl.nasa.gov\/missions\/uninhabited-aerial-vehicle-synthetic-aperture-radar-uavsar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">UAVSAR<\/a>\u00a0(Uninhabited Aerial Vehicle Synthetic Aperture Radar) mounted to the belly of the aircraft.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"featured featured-image component-center\">\n<div class=\"m\"><picture><source media=\"(max-width: 767px)\" radar, which produces 2D images of the ice sheet, UAVSAR produces more dimensional mapping, which is why the image that came back showing the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/us\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">U.S.<\/a> Cold War relic known as Camp Century was so visible.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">The map above from UAVSAR shows a clear layout of Camp Century data-v-438398f6=\"\">&#8220;We were looking for the bed of the ice and out pops Camp Century,&#8221; said Alex Gardner, a cryospheric scientist at NASA\u2019s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. &#8220;We didn\u2019t know what it was at first.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">Camp Century was a U.S. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/military\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">military<\/a> base constructed in 1959 within the Greenland ice sheet with a network of tunnels and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/infrastructure\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">infrastructure<\/a>. According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/usace.contentdm.oclc.org\/digital\/collection\/p266001coll1\/id\/3968\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">U.S. Army Corps of Engineers<\/a> post-build report, temperatures ranged from 10 degrees to 20 below zero during the construction.
