Merlin Entertainments announced Wednesday that O&#8217;Neil had informed its board that he is leaving for &#8220;another opportunity&#8221; and stepping down as CEO at the end of the year.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"inline editorial float-r\" data-behavior=\"article_related\">\n<h2 class=\"editorial-title\">Editor&#8217;s Picks<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><a name=\"&amp;lpos=story:editorspicks:inline:1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/golf\/story\/_\/id\/42485481\/pga-tour-eligibility-reduced-field-size-reduced-tour-cards\" class=\"img-link\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/a.espncdn.com\/combiner\/i?img=\/photo\/2024\/1119\/r1417088_1296x1296_1-1.jpg&amp;w=130&amp;h=130&amp;scale=crop&amp;location=center\" width=\"65\" height=\"65\"\/><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/aside>\n<p>Norman, 69, had previously said he expects to remain with LIV Golf in some capacity. He told Sports Illustrated that his contract with the circuit ends in August 2025.<\/p>\n<p>A LIV Golf spokesman declined comment when reached by ESPN on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Sports Business Journal first reported that LIV Golf was targeting O&#8217;Neil for the position.<\/p>\n<p>Norman, a two-time Open Championship winner, helped reshape men&#8217;s professional golf by recruiting PGA Tour players to the breakaway circuit, which has been financed by Saudi Arabia&#8217;s Public Investment Fund the past three years.<\/p>\n<p>Norman helped lure major champions <a data-player-guid=\"b9dfbb7c-0b61-caad-280f-512c677e8e8f\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/golf\/player\/_\/id\/10046\/bryson-dechambeau\">Bryson DeChambeau<\/a>, <a data-player-guid=\"622fce94-22b9-eba8-74e0-98fe8a022b83\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/golf\/player\/_\/id\/308\/phil-mickelson\">Phil Mickelson<\/a>, <a data-player-guid=\"b864c33d-64bc-5e24-9899-d07ab1503585\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/golf\/player\/_\/id\/3448\/dustin-johnson\">Dustin Johnson<\/a>, <a data-player-guid=\"6188fa15-d916-fcdf-278d-8a80ca29d311\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/golf\/player\/_\/id\/9131\/cameron-smith\">Cameron Smith<\/a>, <a data-player-guid=\"bb9f978c-1e0f-b6ca-83ab-255e22dc6e78\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/golf\/player\/_\/id\/6798\/brooks-koepka\">Brooks Koepka<\/a>, <a data-player-guid=\"f7192f24-1537-e91b-de6f-3548d5989626\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/golf\/player\/_\/id\/9780\/jon-rahm\">Jon Rahm<\/a> and others to the new league with guaranteed contracts worth more than $100 million.<\/p>\n<p>O&#8217;Neill also worked as the president of Madison Square Garden and was an employee of the NBA.<\/p>\n<p>The PGA Tour and the PIF have been in negotiations for months about a deal that would inject more than $1 billion from the PIF into PGA Tour Enterprises, the new for-profit entity launched by the tour and Strategic Sports Group.<\/p>\n<p>The PGA Tour, DP World Tour and PIF signed a framework agreement on June 6, 2023, to form an alliance.
