It\u2019s a trend driven by \u201cpent-up demand for device upgrades,\u201d the research group said in a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.idc.com\/getdoc.jsp?containerId=prUS52757624\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">news release<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And while this year marked a robust recovery for the smartphone space, IDC expects growth to slow to single digits from next year and beyond, due to increasing smartphone penetration, longer refresh cycles, and a fast-growing market for used phones.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhile <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/artificial-intelligence-2\/2024\/how-ai-could-supercharge-smartphones\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GenAI<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> continues to be a hot topic and top priority for many vendors, it is yet to impact demand significantly and drive early upgrades,\u201d said Nabila Popal, senior research director with IDC\u2019s Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cWhile we continue to believe GenAI will revolutionize the user experience in the years to come, more investments are needed to increase consumer awareness and introduce a \u2018must have\u2019 feature that will rush consumers to the store and create that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/apple\/2024\/apples-slow-ai-rollout-threatens-iphone-super-cycle-upgrade\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">super cycle<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which everyone is waiting for.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For now, added Popal, IDC anticipates that smartphones using generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) will \u201ctake their place in premium flagship devices\u201d and become 70% of the smartphone market by 2028.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the report, Android phones saw rapid growth of 7.6% this year in Asia (excluding Japan and China), Latin America, the Middle East and Africa, especially in lower-end devices. This growth was crucial to the overall 6.2% increase.
