Significant snow totals are possible downwind of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario with travel disruptions especially on Interstate 90 between Cleveland and Buffalo and on Interstate 80 north of Syracuse.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\"><strong>BUFFALO, N.Y.<\/strong> \u2013 A rush of arctic air will plunge temperatures across the country after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/thanksgiving\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Thanksgiving<\/a>, creating a long-duration <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/learn\/lake-effect-snow-science-explainer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lake-effect snow<\/a> event in the Great Lakes, where multiple feet of snow are expected to pile up through early next week, and dangerously cold temperatures in the Midwest.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">After above-average temperatures for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/midwest\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Midwest<\/a> this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/fall\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fall<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/weather-news\/cold-temperatures-thanksgiving-forecast\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">first arctic outbreak of the season<\/a> will bring &#8220;dangerously cold&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/learn\/what-does-wind-chill-mean\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wind chills<\/a> of 15-30 degrees below zero for the northern Plains and Upper Midwest, according to NOAA&#8217;s Weather Prediction Center (WPC).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">As the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/weather-news\/thanksgiving-winter-storm-snow-2024\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Thanksgiving Day <u>winter<\/u> storm<\/a> exits the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/northeast\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>Northeast<\/u><\/a>, it will begin to pull in arctic air from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/canada\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>Canada<\/u><\/a> and bring the cold air as far as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/southeast\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>Southeast<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n<div data-v-b8684aba=\"\">\n<div class=\"freeform-content\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"100%\" src=\"https:\/\/media.foxweather.com\/weather\/National%20Departures%20by%20Population.png\"\/><fig-caption>Temperature departures through Saturday.<br \/><strong>(FOX Weather)<\/strong><\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<p>\u00a0<\/fig-caption><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">By Black Friday, nearly 230 million Americans will experience below-average temperatures.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">According to the WPC, wind chills should fall well below zero across the northern Plains and Upper Midwest.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">Areas of the Dakotas and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/minnesota\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Minnesota<\/a> will see dangerously cold temperatures that could cause <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/learn\/what-is-hypothermia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hypothermia<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/learn\/what-is-frostbite\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">frostbite<\/a> if unprotected skin is exposed. Some areas will drop to between -30 and -40 degrees when factoring in the wind chill.<\/p>\n<div data-v-b8684aba=\"\">\n<div class=\"freeform-content\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"100%\" src=\"https:\/\/media.foxweather.com\/weather\/FRI%20Triple%20Threat%20Wind%20Chill%20Temps.png\"\/><fig-caption>Forecast wind chill in the Upper Midwest.<br \/><strong>(FOX Weather)<\/strong><\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<p>\u00a0<\/fig-caption><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">Travelers in these regions should be sure to have a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/learn\/traveling-this-winter-heres-what-to-keep-in-your-car-in-case-you-get-stuck\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">winter survival kit<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 data-v-4e81e892=\"\"><strong>Feet of lake-effect snow expected from New York to Michigan<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">The coldest air of the season will drop temperatures over the Great Lakes, which are currently experiencing record-warm <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/weather-forecast\/current-temperature-map\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">temperatures<\/a>. Beginning Friday, this combination will trigger a long-duration lake-effect snowstorm.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">A Lake-Effect Snow Warning is in effect through Monday for western <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/new-york\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New York<\/a> cities and towns along Lake Erie \u2013 including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/local-weather\/new-york\/orchard-park\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Orchard Park<\/a>, where the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/lifestyle\/bills-49ers-snow-buffalo-nfl-football-sunday\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Buffalo Bills are scheduled to take on the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday Night Football<\/a> \u2013 and central and northern New York cities and towns along Lake Ontario \u2013 including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/local-weather\/new-york\/oswego\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Oswego<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/local-weather\/new-york\/watertown\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Watertown<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">Other areas in western New York, northeastern <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/local-weather\/ohio\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ohio<\/a> and northwestern <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/pennsylvania\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pennsylvania<\/a> are under a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/weather-news\/winter-storm-warning-criteria-nws-new\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Winter Storm Watch<\/a> from Friday through Monday. That includes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/local-weather\/new-york\/buffalo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Buffalo<\/a>, New York, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/local-weather\/pennsylvania\/erie\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Erie<\/a>, Pennsylvania.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/lifestyle\/bills-49ers-snow-buffalo-nfl-football-sunday\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>BILLS-49ERS PREVIEW: COULD SNOW BURY BUFFALO AHEAD OF SUNDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL?<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<div data-v-b8684aba=\"\">\n<div class=\"freeform-content\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"100%\" src=\"https:\/\/media.foxweather.com\/weather\/Great%20Lakes%20Winter%20Alerts.png\"\/><fig-caption>Winter weather alerts across the Great Lakes region.<br \/><strong>(FOX Weather)<\/strong><\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<p>\u00a0<\/fig-caption><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">The arctic outbreak is bad news for post-Thanksgiving travelers this weekend.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">The WPC said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">travel<\/a> disruptions are likely, especially on Interstate 90 between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/local-weather\/ohio\/cleveland\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cleveland<\/a> and Buffalo and on Interstate 81 north of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/local-weather\/new-york\/syracuse\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Syracuse<\/a>, New York<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/extreme-weather\/a-look-back-on-buffalos-historic-2014-snowvember-storms-that-left-7-feet-of-snow-in-some-spots\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><u>A LOOK BACK ON BUFFALO&#8217;S HISTORIC 2014 \u2018SNOWVEMBER\u2019 STORMS THAT LEFT 7 FEET OF SNOW IN SOME SPOTS<\/u><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">The highest snow totals are expected downwind of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario as the lake-effect snow event continues to unfold over the better part of next week.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">&#8220;Colder air pouring over the region through the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/holidays\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">holiday<\/a> weekend will then set the stage for significant lake-effect snow east of lakes Erie and Ontario,&#8221; the National Weather Service office in Buffalo said. &#8220;Multiple feet of snow can be expected in the typical snow belts east of the lakes.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">The FOX Forecast Center is forecasting up to 4 feet of snow from far northeastern Ohio through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/local-weather\/pennsylvania\/erie\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Erie<\/a>, Pennsylvania, and areas near and south of Buffalo and Watertown, New York.
