{"id":130920,"date":"2024-11-28T05:05:51","date_gmt":"2024-11-27T22:05:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hotvideos24.online\/?p=130920"},"modified":"2024-11-28T05:05:51","modified_gmt":"2024-11-27T22:05:51","slug":"nintendo-targets-reddit-pirates-in-piracy-crackdown","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hotvideos24.online\/?p=130920","title":{"rendered":"Nintendo targets Reddit pirates in piracy crackdown"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n     data-ad-layout-key=\"-fb+5w+4e-db+86\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"7910942971\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"context-excerpt text-lg\">\n                The &#8216;SwitchPirates&#8217; subreddit is in Nintendo&#8217;s sights.\n              <\/p>\n<p>Nintendo&#8217;s ongoing fight against Switch piracy has a new target in its sights \u2014 and that&#8217;s the <em>r\/SwitchPirates<\/em> subreddit.<\/p>\n<p>As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamefile.news\/p\/after-inc-plague-inc-ndemic-pandemic?ref=overkill.wtf\" rel=\"noreferrer\">first reported by Stephen Totillo in Game File<\/a>, Nintendo&#8217;s recent federal court filing (<em>dated November 21<\/em>) highlights how the company is now taking aim at one of the largest hubs for Switch-related piracy chatter. <\/p>\n<p>With over 200,000 members, the sizeable Reddit community is now very much in Nintendo\u2019s crosshairs, chiefly due to being linked to <a href=\"https:\/\/mynintendonews.com\/2024\/11\/15\/nintendo-tracked-down-an-alleged-switch-pirate-via-reddit-repair-orders\/?ref=overkill.wtf\" rel=\"noreferrer\">alleged modder James \u201cArchbox\u201d Williams<\/a>. He&#8217;s a modder who previously ran what Nintendo describes as a \u201c<em>vast network of Pirate Shops<\/em>\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Nintendo&#8217;s legal filing alleges that Williams, who is said to have served as a primary moderator of the r\/<em>SwitchPirates<\/em>\u00a0subreddit, used the platform as a way to promote pirated Switch games and related tools designed to circumvent console security.<\/p>\n<p>Nintendo goes on to claim that this\u00a0subreddit has played a central role in fostering Switch piracy, describing it as a place where pseudonymous users can come together and coordinate the distribution of illegal content (<em>such as Switch ROMs<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p>From the filing:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cReddit, Inc. operates a social media platform where users, often using pseudonyms, may post to different forums known as communities or \u2018subreddits.\u2019 Defendant was a primary moderator of the SwitchPirates community, under the name \u2018Archbox,\u2019 which boasted more than 190,000 members.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The company alleges that Williams may have controlled multiple accounts within the subreddit, potentially masking the identities of others involved.<\/p>\n<p>Now Nintendo is seeking the court\u2019s approval to actually subpoena Reddit for user records. These records, if shared, could identify additional moderators or users tied to\u00a0the r\/<em>SwitchPirates subreddits<\/em>. If granted these subpoenas could set something of a precedent for holding platforms like Reddit accountable for being home to such piracy-related conversations. <\/p>\n<p>In addition to requesting records from Reddit, Nintendo&#8217;s filing also makes appeals for information from other companies, including\u00a0domain registrars such as Namecheap and GoDaddy,  along with firms such as Cloudflare, Github, Google, and Discord.<\/p>\n<p>For now, the fate of\u00a0r\/<em>SwitchPirates<\/em>\u00a0hangs in the balance, with Nintendo seemingly poised to escalate its legal campaign against those it identifies as a promoting Switch piracy.<\/p>\n<p>At time of writing, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/SwitchPirates\/?ref=overkill.wtf\" rel=\"noreferrer\">r\/SwitchPirates sub<\/a> is still live, and very active.
