At first, mom Catherine Owens felt confused.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cShe kept telling me her head hurts,\u201d Owens, 29, of West Monroe, Louisiana, tells TODAY.com. \u201cThen she started regressing. She was potty trained from 18 months old, and so when she started having accidents, I was like, OK, this is not normal.\u201dOne night, Gracelyn threw up, which made Owens worry that her daughter had a concussion. So, she took Gracelyn to the emergency room. They ruled out a concussion, but her symptoms worsened. After two visits to the pediatrician and another trip to the emergency room, Owens begged the staff for a CT scan of Gracelyn\u2019s head. After advocating for her daughter, they finally got the right diagnosis.<\/span><span class=\"caption__source\" data-testid=\"caption__source\">Courtesy Catherine Owens<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2 class=\"\">Worrisome symptoms that went dismissed <\/h2>\n<p class=\"\">After Gracelyn started having headaches and accidents in the summer of 2023, Owens noticed that she was acting unusually. She began walking with her head tilted, and it seemed as if she was off-balance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cShe could still walk, but she was walking with her head titled,\u201d Owens says. \u201cI was like, \u2018Maybe it\u2019s just a stage she\u2019s going through.\u2019 I don\u2019t know. &#8230; It just didn\u2019t feel right.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Then, after about a month of her strange symptoms, one night in September, Gracelyn began vomiting one night and couldn&#8217;t stop. Earlier, she had told her mom that she hit her head. Worried about a concussion, Owens took her to the emergency room.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cThere was no bump. There was no indication that she hit her head, no red mark or anything,\u201d she says. \u201cWhen she started throwing up, a few hours later, I was like, \u2018Oh my goodness maybe she does have a concussion.\u2019\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Doctors tested her for several illnesses, and she tested positive for strep throat. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cThey wrote her off,\u201d Owens says. \u201cThey had told me that strep throat was what it was, and that she was so tired, so exhausted that she physically couldn\u2019t hold her head up.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">This struck Owens as unusual, but she trusted the doctors and gave her daughter the medication as directed. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">By October, Gracelyn\u2019s symptoms hadn&#8217;t improved.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cShe\u2019s saying her head hurts, and she was throwing up off and on,\u201d Owens says. \u201cBut it was clear mucous.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">This time, they visited the pediatrician, who thought perhaps Gracelyn was experiencing seasonal allergies. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cThat made sense,\u201d Owens says. \u201cBut I was more concerned about her head. I was like, \u2018She keeps saying her head hurts, and it\u2019s always in the same spot and I just don\u2019t understand.\u2019\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The pediatrician had an explanation for this.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cShe was like, \u2018Well, you always have migraines, so maybe she\u2019s copying you,\u2019\u201d Owens recalls. \u201cI didn\u2019t really like that answer because I felt like she was writing her off.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Frustrated, Owens made another appointment for a few weeks later and brought her husband to \u201cback (her) up.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Again, the doctor explained away Gracelyn\u2019s symptoms and even suggested she return to wearing diapers, chalking up her regression to moving from a crib to a toddler bed and the birth of her brother, then 8 months old. Doctors are unsure if this will impact her long-term, but wearing a patch helps her eye rest.<\/span><span class=\"caption__source\" data-testid=\"caption__source\">Courtesy Catherine Owens<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"\">The same day, Owens had an appointment with the specialist who treated her migraines, so she asked the nurse to look at Gracelyn because she was so concerned by her daughter\u2019s symptoms. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cShe was the first person that actually heard me as a mother,\u201d she says. \u201cShe\u2019s like, \u2018Yeah, something&#8217;s definitely wrong with her. I don\u2019t know what, but if I were you, I would bring her to the ER and demand they do a CT scan.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">When they arrived at the emergency room, though, staff insisted that the girl had \u201csomething viral,&#8221; Owens recalls. \u201cI was like, \u2018I respect you as a doctor, but I need you to respect my motherly instinct because something not right with her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Viral testing came back negative, so the doctors finally ordered a CT scan to ease Owen&#8217;s fears. It found that Gracelyn had masses on her brain, but more scans were needed to figure out exactly what they were. Gracelyn was rushed in an ambulance to a children&#8217;s hospital two hours away. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">An MRI at the children&#8217;s hospital revealed she had a brain tumor and needed surgery within a few days.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Gracelyn had a Grade 2 ependymoma, which starts in ependymal cells in the central nervous system, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.gov\/rare-brain-spine-tumor\/tumors\/ependymoma\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Cancer Institute<\/a>. While Grade 1 and 2 ependymomas are not considered cancerous, her tumor was &#8220;as close as it can be to cancerous,\u201d Dr. Nir Shimony, a pediatric neurosurgeon at Semmes Murphey in Memphis and one of Gracelyn\u2019s doctors, tells TODAY.com. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">After a nine-hour surgery, doctors removed as much of the tumor as they could. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cIt was intense,\u201d Owens says. \u201cThey were confident that they had gotten (the tumor) all out.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Still, the doctors sent Gracelyn\u2019s case to St. Jude Children\u2019s Research Hospital, and they eventually transferred Gracelyn there. Imaging at St. Jude revealed that some of the tumor was still nestled in Gracelyn\u2019s brain, and doctors wanted to conduct another surgery to take more of it out. Doctors thought Gracelyn would respond better to radiation if she had as much of the tumor out as possible. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cIt was just one shock after the next because we were not expecting another surgery,\u201d Owens says. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Gracelyn experienced a few complications. A scratch and possible nerve damage to one eye led to loss of vision, and an injury to a nerve in her right ear means she is deaf in that ear. It\u2019s unclear whether the vision and hearing loss will be permanent, Owens says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">In December 2023, Gracelyn started radiation and stayed at St. Jude until February 2024 for treatment. Doctors are closely watching her as a precaution. <\/span><span class=\"caption__source\" data-testid=\"caption__source\">Courtesy Catherine Owens<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"\">Gracelyn has a grade 2 ependymoma, which is \u201crelatively aggressive,\u201d and they can develop in the spine, the supratentorial area of the brain, where the cerebrum is, or the posterior fossa area, a spot near the cerebellum and the brain stem, Shimony says. Gracelyn\u2019s tumor grew in the posterior fossa area.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.gov\/types\/brain\/patient\/childhood-ependymoma#_80\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Cancer Institute<\/a>, symptoms of childhood posterior fossa ependymomas include: <\/p>\n<ul class=\"break-above body-ul body-list-el\">\n<li>Neck pain <\/li>\n<li>Problems walking<\/li>\n<li>Balance troubles <\/li>\n<li>Fatigue<\/li>\n<li>Vomiting <\/li>\n<li>Acting easily annoyed<\/li>\n<li>A gaze that looks only downward <\/li>\n<li>Delayed development <\/li>\n<li>An enlarged head<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"\">Headaches sometimes can indicate a brain tumor. But Shimony urges caution in assuming that a child&#8217;s headache means they have a brain tumor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cKids can have headaches for many reasons,\u201d he says. \u201cShould we do a head scan for every kid with a headache? That\u2019s dangerous. That\u2019s a lot of head scans.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Still, Shimony urges parents to take their children to their pediatrician if they have headaches to try to find the underlying cause. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cIf the headache has no other reasons or there are other signs or symptoms \u2014 and especially if the headaches are something that is ongoing \u2014 it\u2019s best to have a scan of the head, preferably an MRI, to rule out bad things,\u201d he says. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Treatment for ependymoma include traditional cancer treatments, such as surgery and radiation. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cIt is still what we call a surgeon\u2019s disease, which means that surgery comes first,\u201d he says. \u201cSurgery will give the best option for better prognosis.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Radiation normally follows surgery, along with follow-up appointments and scans to make sure the tumor has not returned or grown.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cIf there is a residual tumor after everything that has been done, then it\u2019s being followed carefully, and if this residual tumor is showing signs that it\u2019s wanting to evolve or grow, sometimes we\u2019ll go for another surgery or another treatment modality,\u201d Shimony says. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Early diagnosis remains key in a child\u2019s prognosis, and Shimony applauds Owen and other parents who advocate for their child in receiving a correct diagnosis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cNo parents would like to know that their kid has a brain tumor,\u201d he says. \u201cThe one thing that has been shown across any type of tumor (for good prognosis) is early diagnosis. So, if the parents have a concern, if they see something they don\u2019t like, they just need to make sure their kid is being taken care of.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"\">\u2018Always trust your mom gut\u2019<\/h2>\n<p class=\"\">Gracelyn returned home in February 2024, after four months in the hospital. She immediately played with her toys.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cShe was ecstatic. She went straight to her playroom, and they did not go to bed that night,\u201d Owens says. \u201cWe didn\u2019t even care because we were just so happy to see her smile.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Now 3, Gracelyn acts like a \u201clittle mama,\u201d taking charge of her friends in day care when she attends. Owens thought a screw from one of her surgeries was coming out.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cIt was perfectly round and it\u2019s hard. It\u2019s not like a cyst, where it is kind of squishy,\u201d Owens says. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Owens took Gracelyn to the pediatrician, who agreed it seemed like a screw and recommended that the doctors at St. Jude fix it. Immediately, doctors knew the screw being loose could be dangerous for the girl. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cThe pressure of putting her hat on or putting a headband on&#8221; could have caused the screw to rupture the skin on Gracelyn&#8217;s head, Owens explains. \u201cIf it ruptures, she\u2019s at risk for infection.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Again, Gracelyn needed to stay at St. Jude\u2019s and undergo a surgery. She has recovered well. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cShe\u2019s perfectly fine.
