This chaotic spectacle is one of the Japanese prefecture\u2019s \u201cdanjiri matsuri,\u201d or float festivals.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3y8fcsa00093b6mphqud3rt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Held over a few weeks in October, they\u2019re considered one of the most dangerous events on Japan\u2019s festival calendar. The floats weigh several tons, and accidents sometimes occur while navigating them around sharp corners. They can even be deadly, especially for those who ride on top of the moving danjiri, known as \u201cdaikugata.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3y8fcsa000a3b6mik0rimo0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cDanjiri sometimes fall over or collide, and I\u2019ve seen daikugata fall,\u201d says Shinya Ogura, a six-time danjiri rider at one such festival in Osaka\u2019s Otori region.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3y8fcsb000c3b6mgjt70h16@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            For Ogura, the view from the top \u2014 and the thrill of staying up there \u2014 is part of what makes the experience so addictive.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3y8fcsb000d3b6molp4pwhf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI think it\u2019s a very rewarding position,\u201d he says. \u201cMy grandfather and father have participated since I was a child, and I\u2019ve followed them.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3y8fcsb000e3b6mxrzee9uo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Passed down over generations, some estimate the festivals began around 300 years ago as a way for local communities to ward off illness and bad luck or to pray for a rich harvest.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3y8fcsb000f3b6mnih8wr6g@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            For centuries, danjiri festivals have also celebrated woodworking. \u201cDaikugata\u201d directly translates as carpenter; the festival\u2019s prized role was once reserved for the people who made the floats. Each danjiri is adorned with hundreds of individual figures, chiseled by hand.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3y8fcsb000h3b6mombujgti@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Today, artisans like Akihiko Maeda continue the tradition. The district pays around $650,000 for each one.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3y8fcsb000l3b6m3nf5aaor@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cOnce a danjiri is built, it\u2019s used for an average of 70 to 80 years,\u201d the artisan says.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3y8fcsb000m3b6mnfpsxm7y@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But demand for Maeda\u2019s work is waning as the number of festival participants declines.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3y8fcsb000n3b6m6wxq6dnf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            With <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/06\/07\/asia\/japan-birth-rate-population-dating-app-intl-hnk\/index.html\">record-low birth rates<\/a> across Japan, the country\u2019s population is shrinking. In 2020, almost 28% of Osaka\u2019s population was over 65, compared to the global average of just over 9%.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3y8fcsb000p3b6m1vqs72p3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Kazuma Nakao, who has participated in Otori\u2019s danjiri festival for over 40 years, says there aren\u2019t enough physically-able people   required to pull their float.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm3y8fcsb000q3b6mir20tdd7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe need to borrow people from other districts.
