They also saw small droplets floating in the air.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>The hatch was quickly closed again, and air scrubbers got to work. The next day, contaminant sensors reported normal air quality.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>This might seem like a lot of bother for one funny odor, but on a confined spacecraft, there&#8217;s no room for funky smells.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>Nose-scrunching aromas can be a red flag for toxic materials, and even the safest of stenches can build to intolerable levels when there&#8217;s no escape.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>In this case, the odor emanating from the Progress cargo spacecraft was worrisome enough that Russian astronauts donned protective equipment while the air was being cleaned, <a href=\"https:\/\/russianspaceweb.com\/progress-ms-29.html#docking\">according to the reporting of Anatoly Zak<\/a> of the independent news site Russian Space Web.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There are no concerns for the crew,&#8221;  <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Space_Station\/status\/1860798995905540336\">reports<\/a> the official ISS X account, &#8220;and as of Sunday afternoon, the crew is working to open the hatch.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">On Nov. 23, the unpiloted Progress 90 resupply spacecraft successfully docked to the International Space Station\u2019s Poisk module. After opening the Progress spacecraft&#8217;s hatch, the Roscosmos cosmonauts noticed an unexpected odor and observed small droplets, prompting the crew to\u2026<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 International Space Station (@Space_Station) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Space_Station\/status\/1860798995905540336?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 24, 2024<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Even on a typical day, the ISS doesn&#8217;t smell so good. Some astronauts <a href=\"https:\/\/reporter.anu.edu.au\/all-stories\/what-does-space-smell-like\">have compared<\/a> the station&#8217;s stench to a mix of burnt steak and body odor, and that&#8217;s after a panel of experts <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/turns-out-nasa-has-a-chemical-specialist-who-sniffs-things-before-they-go-into-space\">carefully smell tested<\/a> each and every item sent up there.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>But even if a material smells okay on Earth, it could have a different aroma in space. That&#8217;s because of a concept known as <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Outgassing\">outgassing<\/a>, which is what gives that &#8216;new car&#8217; smell to freshly made vehicles.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2024\/11\/25\/science\/astronauts-space-station-odor-russian-module\/index.html\">In a statement to CNN<\/a>, NASA officials attributed the Progress spacecraft&#8217;s recent odor and droplets to this phenomenon.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>Outgassing can occur when a material is exposed to heat or a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.svmicrowave.com\/what-is-outgassing\">vacuum environment<\/a>, causing it to release gases or water vapor that are trapped inside. These gases can sometimes be odorous, and if kept in a confined area, the smell can build.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s why space agencies usually only allow materials with low-outgassing properties to be sent to the ISS.
