But many details were still unclear, such as how it will be enforced and what platforms will be covered.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">After sailing through Parliament\u2019s lower house on Wednesday, the bill passed the Senate on Thursday with bipartisan support. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has said that it puts Australia at the vanguard of efforts to protect the mental health and well-being of children from detrimental effects of social media, such as <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/11\/07\/world\/australia\/australia-teens-social-media.html\" title=\"\">online hate or bullying<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The law, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pm.gov.au\/media\/albanese-government-delivers-world-leading-legislation-protect-children-online\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">he has said<\/a>, puts the onus on social media platforms to take \u201creasonable steps\u201d to prevent anyone under 16 from having an account. Corporations could be fined up to 49.5 million Australian dollars (about $32 million) for \u201csystemic\u201d failures to implement age requirements.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Neither underage users nor their parents will face punishment for violations. And whether children find ways to get past the restrictions is beside the point, Mr. Albanese said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cWe know some kids will find workarounds, but we\u2019re sending a message to social media companies to clean up their act,\u201d he <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pm.gov.au\/media\/albanese-government-delivers-world-leading-legislation-protect-children-online\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">said in a statement this month<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">As with many countries\u2019 regulations on alcohol or tobacco, the law will create a new category of \u201cage-restricted social media platforms\u201d accessible only to those 16 and older.
