href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/learn\/lake-effect-snow-science-explainer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lake-effect snowstorm<\/a> is set to bury several towns bordering the Great Lakes with multiple feet of snow later this week, snarling post-Thanksgiving travel as the weekend draws to a close.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">As a potent low pressure system moves out of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/northeast\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Northeast<\/a> on Thanksgiving, the coldest air of the season will chase the storm out of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/canada\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Canada<\/a> starting on Friday and sweep across the Great Lakes, which are currently experiencing record-warm water\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/weather-forecast\/current-temperature-map\">temperatures<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">&#8220;This is going to be a long-fused event,&#8221; NWS Buffalo lead forecaster Kirk Apffel told FOX Weather. &#8220;We&#8217;re looking for Friday through at least Monday, there&#8217;s going to be snow in the area.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div data-v-b8684aba=\"\">\n<div class=\"freeform-content\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"100%\" src=\"https:\/\/media.foxweather.com\/weather\/Great%20Lakes%20Winter%20Alerts.png\"\/><figcaption>Winter Weather alerts for Great Lakes<br \/><strong>(FOX Weather)<\/strong><\/figcaption><hr\/>\n<p>\u00a0<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">Nearly 1.5 million are now under a Lake-Effect Snow Warning through at least Monday across parts of western New York, far northwestern Pennsylvania and northeastern Ohio as Lake Erie and Lake Ontario crank up the snow-making machine.<\/p>\n<h2 data-v-4e81e892=\"\">How much snow is expected around Buffalo and Watertown?<\/h2>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">While current projections keep the heaviest snow just south of Downtown <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/local-weather\/new-york\/buffalo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Buffalo<\/a>, which remains in a Winter Storm Watch, the Lake-Effect Snow Warning does include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/local-weather\/new-york\/orchard-park\">Orchard Park<\/a>, where the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/lifestyle\/bills-49ers-snow-buffalo-nfl-football-sunday\">Buffalo Bills are scheduled to take on the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday Night Football.<\/a>\u00a0Central and northern New York cities and towns along Lake Ontario, including\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/local-weather\/new-york\/oswego\">Oswego<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Watertown, are in the warning as well.<\/p>\n<div data-v-b8684aba=\"\">\n<div class=\"freeform-content\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"100%\" src=\"https:\/\/media.foxweather.com\/weather\/Watertown%20Metro%20Snow%20QPF.png?v1\"\/><figcaption>Snow Forecast Totals for Waterton Areas off Lake Ontario<br \/><strong>(FOX Weather)<\/strong><\/figcaption><hr\/>\n<p>\u00a0<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">Snow forecasts from the FOX Forecast Center show the heaviest amounts off Lake Ontario, with 2-3 feet of snow in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/local-weather\/new-york\/watertown\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Watertown<\/a> between Friday and Wednesday, 3-4 feet in Lowville and 4-6 feet in Montague.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">Off Lake Erie, Buffalo as of now is expecting about 3-5 inches, but total snow forecasts rapidly increase as you head south, reaching a foot in Hamburg and 2-3 feet in Dunkirk.<\/p>\n<div data-v-b8684aba=\"\">\n<div class=\"freeform-content\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"100%\" data-v-4e81e892=\"\">How much snow is expected near Cleveland and Erie?<\/h2>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">Those 2-3 foot snow forecasts carry farther south into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/local-weather\/pennsylvania\/erie\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Erie<\/a>, Pennsylvania and even northeastern <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/ohio\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ohio<\/a> around <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/local-weather\/ohio\/ashtabula\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ashtabula<\/a>. \u00a0<\/p>\n<div data-v-b8684aba=\"\">\n<div class=\"freeform-content\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"100%\" rel=\"noopener\">Cleveland<\/a> area is under a Winter Weather Advisory for up to 6 inches of snow, mainly in the northeastern suburbs.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/learn\/lake-effect-snow-science-explainer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>WHAT MAKES A LAKE-EFFECT SNOWSTORM?<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">With water temperatures running 4 to 6.5 degrees above average, the arctic winds pick up the warmth and moisture from the waters and transfer it into the lowest portion of the Earth\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/atmosphere\">atmosphere<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">This rising air condenses into clouds, which can grow into narrow bands that are capable of producing snowfall rates on the order of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.weather.gov\/safety\/winter-lake-effect-snow\">2 to 3 inches per hour or more<\/a>, according to the href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/snow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">snows<\/a> are also likely across Michigan\u2019s Upper Peninsula and northwestern <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/michigan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Michigan<\/a> as the chilly winds blow off Lake Superior and northern Lake Michigan. But forecasts have wildly variable snow totals, ranging from 5 inches to as much as 2-3 feet, depending on where snow bands are set up.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">&#8220;It really a lot of it has to do with the (winds) running down the length of the lake,&#8221; Apffel said. &#8220;And sometimes you have a favored area where it will converge, come together, and that&#8217;s when you can get some of those most intense bands. And when it&#8217;s not running down the length of the lake, sometimes things tend to be more disorganized with multiple bands. So it is something that we can forecast, but it is challenging.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"featured featured-video video-ct\">\n<div class=\"video-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"info\">\n<div class=\"caption\">\n<p class=\"sub-text\">NWS Buffalo lead forecaster Kirk Apffel joins FOX Weather to talk about the heavy snows coming to western New York including parts of Buffalo due to a strong lake-effect snow event starting Friday and lasting for days.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">The Lake-Effect snow squalls are expected to last through the middle of next week, until another weather system comes along to change the wind direction.
