{"id":131262,"date":"2024-11-29T03:37:56","date_gmt":"2024-11-28T20:37:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hotvideos24.online\/?p=131262"},"modified":"2024-11-29T03:37:56","modified_gmt":"2024-11-28T20:37:56","slug":"billionaire-bernard-arnault-tells-court-he-was-completely-unaware-ex-spy-chief-had-allegedly-abused-powers-to-protect-lvmh","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hotvideos24.online\/?p=131262","title":{"rendered":"Billionaire Bernard Arnault tells court he was &#8216;completely unaware&#8217; ex-spy chief had allegedly abused powers to protect LVMH"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n     data-ad-layout-key=\"-fb+5w+4e-db+86\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"7910942971\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<p>France\u2019s richest man, LVMH chief Bernard Arnault, testified Thursday in the influence-peddling trial of the former head of France\u2019s domestic intelligence agency, denying any knowledge of an alleged scheme to protect the luxury group.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Bernard Squarcini, the former head of the DCRI security service (since renamed the DGSI), is one of 10 men on trial and charged with using his security contacts for private gain, including obtaining confidential information on behalf of LVMH.<\/p>\n<p>Squarcini faces 11 charges\u00a0in the Paris criminal court case, including influence peddling, misuse of public funds and compromising national security information.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would like to point out that I am here as a witness, a simple witness, and that my indictment was never considered by the investigating magistrates,\u201d Arnault said in his opening statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was completely unaware\u201d of the alleged scheme, he added.<\/p>\n<p>The charges relate both to the period when Squarcini headed the DCRI from 2008-12 and to his subsequent return to the private sector, when he worked largely for LVMH as a consultant.<\/p>\n<p>Investigators say that as early as 2008, DCRI officers were deployed to try to identify a blackmailer targeting Arnault.<\/p>\n<p>Other allegations relate to spying on Francois Ruffin, a former journalist who is now a leading left-wing lawmaker \u2014 and, from 2013 to 2016, the leftist newspaper Fakir that Ruffin founded.<\/p>\n<p>Before his 2017 election to parliament, Ruffin produced a satirical film about Arnault titled \u201cMerci Patron\u201d (\u201cThanks Boss\u201d) that won a Cesar award \u2014 French cinema\u2019s equivalent of an Oscar.<\/p>\n<p>Ruffin, whose lawyers requested that Arnault testify, has said that the lawsuit had \u201cbeen decapitated\u201d because LVMH itself was not in the dock.<\/p>\n<p>The company settled out of court in 2021, paying 10 million euros in fines. Arnault was interrogated by investigating magistrates but neither he nor LVMH were ever put on trial.<\/p>\n<p>LVMH had been concerned about the activities of Ruffin, who at the time was planning to disrupt its shareholder meetings.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2018Absolutely not\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>But Arnault said that in the accord with investigating magistrates \u201cit is stated that the group does not recognise any responsibility\u201d, saying the deal had been \u201cproposed\u201d by the magistrates.<\/p>\n<p>Agreeing to the deal was a question of \u201cavoiding being caught up in the media uproar that followed\u201d, Arnault told the court.<\/p>\n<p>He also denounced Ruffin, saying \u201cI think he is trying to exploit this trial for personal, media, political and even commercial reasons\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Asked by the judge if he was aware of an attempted blackmail targeting his private life in 2008, for which the DCRI mobilised its agents to identify the blackmailer, Arnault replied: \u201cAbsolutely not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arnault was also questioned if he was informed by Pierre Gode, the vice president of the group who died in 2018, of surveillance of Francois Ruffin and Fakir.
