{"id":131264,"date":"2024-11-29T03:43:48","date_gmt":"2024-11-28T20:43:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hotvideos24.online\/?p=131264"},"modified":"2024-11-29T03:43:48","modified_gmt":"2024-11-28T20:43:48","slug":"low-vaccination-rates-in-north-carolina-heighten-holiday-respiratory-virus-threat-wral-com","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hotvideos24.online\/?p=131264","title":{"rendered":"Low vaccination rates in North Carolina heighten holiday respiratory virus threat :: WRAL.com"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n     data-ad-layout-key=\"-fb+5w+4e-db+86\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"7910942971\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Gathering for the holidays this season could pose an increased<br \/>\nrisk for catching a respiratory virus due to North Carolina&#8217;s low vaccination rates. <\/p>\n<p>The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports only 8.8% of children and 18.9% of adults,<br \/>\nincluding 41% of adults 65 and older, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/respiratory-viruses\/data\/vaccination-trends.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">have received their latest COVID-19 vaccinations as of Nov. 22.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The data is only slightly higher for flu vaccinations, with 33.2%<br \/>\nof children and 36.6% of adults, including 60.9% of adults 65 and older, having received<br \/>\ntheir seasonal flu shots.<\/p>\n<p>Only 40.1% of adults over the age of 75 who are<br \/>\nrecommended to receive the RSV vaccine have reported doing so. <\/p>\n<p>Hilary Martson, chief medical officer for the Food and Drug Administration, said vaccination is<br \/>\nthe best way to reduce your risk of severe illness. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is the time of year where we start to see those<br \/>\nrespiratory viruses picking up, and that\u2019s what we\u2019re starting to see in the<br \/>\ndata,\u201d Martson said.<\/p>\n<p>Martson said being in closer proximity to loved ones, some<br \/>\nof whom may be in at-risk groups, and spending more time indoors during holiday<br \/>\ngatherings creates \u201cthe perfect setup for these respiratory viruses to spread.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She further expressed confidence in current vaccines to<br \/>\nprovide safe and accurate protection against severe illness. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese vaccines, we watch these all the time and we watch<br \/>\nthe side effects. Certainly they are much safer than getting the illnesses<br \/>\nthemselves,\u201d Martson said. \u201cI have two kids and I make sure that they get each<br \/>\nof their vaccines according to the schedule. I am resting assured that they have<br \/>\nthat important protection against those viruses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Even those who tested positive for COVID-19 over the summer may<br \/>\nbe due for an updated shot. If it has been three months since you had the<br \/>\nvirus, you should get an updated vaccine for maximum protection.<\/p>\n<p>Martson said highly contagious viruses like measles also<br \/>\npose a great risk of creating an outbreak when a community\u2019s vaccination rate<br \/>\nfalls below 95%.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the vaccination rates are not high enough, it could<br \/>\nreally take off and cause a lot of infections,\u201d Martson said.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/immunization.dph.ncdhhs.gov\/schools\/kindergartendashboard.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">state&#8217;s kindergarten immunization dashboard<\/a> shows only 93%<br \/>\nof kindergarteners in North Carolina were up to date on all required<br \/>\nvaccinations at the start of last school year.<\/p>\n<p>Wake and Durham counties each reported 92% kindergarten<br \/>\nvaccination compliance, lower than the state average.<\/p>\n<p>According to data from the North Carolina Department of<br \/>\nPublic Instruction, that means roughly 850 students in Wake County and another<br \/>\n180 in Durham County <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wral.com\/story\/unvaccinated-nc-students-could-be-at-risk-of-catching-measles\/21620209\/\">could<br \/>\nbe unprotected against measles<\/a> or other viruses.<\/p>\n<p>The CDC reports 95% of the nearly 250 cases nationwide<br \/>\ninvolved patients who were either unvaccinated or only received one dose.<\/p>\n<p>Washing your hands, staying home when feeling ill and<br \/>\nkeeping COVID-19 tests readily available at home can all reduce your risk of<br \/>\ngetting and spreading respiratory viruses.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n     data-ad-layout-key=\"-fb+5w+4e-db+86\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"7910942971\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script><br \/>\n<br \/><div data-type=\"_mgwidget\" data-widget-id=\"1660802\">\r\n<\/div>\r\n<script>(function(w,q){w[q]=w[q]||[];w[q].push([\"_mgc.load\"])})(window,\"_mgq\");\r\n<\/script>\r\n<br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wral.com\/lifestyle\/health\/low-vaccination-rates-increase-virus-risk-north-carolina-nov-2024\/\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Gathering for the holidays this season could pose an increased risk for catching a respiratory virus due to North Carolina&#8217;s low vaccination rates.
