The course is meant to teach students about cancer treatment and empathy through the lens of a patient.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">He said: &#8216;As a doctor, you have an awareness but not necessarily a visceral understanding of what a patient goes through. The data, the science \u2014 as a patient, that\u2019s like two percent of your day. The rest of the day you\u2019re dealing with your life, so we structured the class around that.&#8217;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">He hopes it will teach students that &#8216;it\u2019s very important to have empathy and an understanding for what [a patient\u2019s] journey looks like.&#8217;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">While Dr Lin was able to start chemotherapy just eight weeks after his cough starts, many young lung cancer patients have a delayed diagnosis due to doctors attributing their symptoms to more common conditions like asthma or bronchitis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">One <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" class=\"\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC3256519\/\">small study<\/a>, for example, found that lung cancer patients on average do not receive treatment for an average of 138 days after symptoms like cough, chest pain, and shortness of breath begin.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">While smokers make up as many as 90 percent of older lung cancer patients, this number drops to 71 percent for younger patients.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Young patients also have significantly shorter exposures, with an average of 11.5 years compared to 49 years in older patients.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">According to recent data from Pew Research, just 10 percent of young adults said they smoked from 2019 to 2023 compared to 35 percent in 2001 to 2003.<\/p>\n<div class=\"artSplitter mol-img-group\" style=\"\">\n<div class=\"mol-img\">\n<div class=\"image-wrap\"> <img decoding=\"async\" id=\"i-2cc45e51bd335f41\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2024\/11\/28\/19\/92599291-14137419-While_Dr_Lin_s_EGFR_mutation_makes_him_a_candidate_for_targeted_-a-9_1732822981811.jpg\" height=\"755\" width=\"634\" alt=\"While Dr Lin's EGFR mutation makes him a candidate for targeted therapies, the cancer can become resistant to the treatment within a year or two\" class=\"blkBorder img-share\" style=\"max-width:100%\" loading=\"lazy\" \/> <\/div>\n<p> <noscript> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"i-2cc45e51bd335f41\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2024\/11\/28\/19\/92599291-14137419-While_Dr_Lin_s_EGFR_mutation_makes_him_a_candidate_for_targeted_-a-9_1732822981811.jpg\" height=\"755\" width=\"634\" alt=\"While Dr Lin's EGFR mutation makes him a candidate for targeted therapies, the cancer can become resistant to the treatment within a year or two\" class=\"blkBorder img-share\" \/> <\/noscript> <\/div>\n<p class=\"imageCaption\">While Dr Lin&#8217;s EGFR mutation makes him a candidate for targeted therapies, the cancer can become resistant to the treatment within a year or two<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><iframe data-xpmodule-iframe-resizable=\"\" scrolling=\"no\" name=\"xp-iframe-m425afaexfue4u1tcj\" class=\"iframe-creator \" src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/RfLEH\/2\/\" allow=\"clipboard-write\" height=\"600\" style=\"border: 0; width: 0; min-width: 100%; \" id=\"xp-iframe-m425afaexfue4u1tcj\"><\/p>\n<p>Your browser does not support iframes.<\/p>\n<p>    <\/iframe><\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">In Dr Lin&#8217;s case, genetic testing revealed his cancer was likely caused by a mutation of his EGFR gene.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">This means the cancer causes an excess of the EGFR protein, which can accelerate the growth of lung cancer cells.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">He said: &#8216;About 50 percent of nonsmoker Asians [with lung cancer]\u00a0have this mutation, and less than 20 percent of non-Hispanic whites have it.\u00a0We don\u2019t really know why Asians get this mutation more than other groups.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">This mutation can also make cancer more aggressive and be diagnosed at later stages.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Dr Lin said: &#8216;Luckily it makes me a candidate for targeted therapy.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">He now takes the daily chemotherapy pill\u00a0Osimertinib, sold under brand name\u00a0Tagrisso, which attacks the mutated cancer cells. He also undergoes additional chemotherapy treatments every three weeks.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">However, he noted that the cancer can become resistant to these targeted therapies within a year or two, which could leave him with few options.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Though the possibility seems grim, he remains optimistic.
