The young sharks are typically 3 to 7 meters (10 to 23 feet) in length, making them more vulnerable to predators. While an orca versus whale shark matchup may seem like an epic battle, the orcas make easy work of the gentle giants.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm41kdnjx000v356mmtoje1t7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe whale shark has the smallest brain compared to body mass. The brain is the size of an egg,\u201d said Francesca Pancaldi, first author of the study and a researcher at Centro Interdisciplinario de Ciencias Marinas in Mexico.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm41kdnjx000w356m36dwkrn3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt\u2019s a big, big fish that is very slow compared with other sharks. It has tiny, tiny teeth that it doesn\u2019t use as a defense mechanism,\u201d Pancaldi added. \u201cThe only defense it has is flailing or diving down. Then, they flip the whale shark so it\u2019s floating belly up and unable to dive down to escape. The orcas then bite the abdomen of their prey, allowing its blood to flow out before consuming its internal organs.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm41kfclz0018356mlwhz1tub@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cYou can clearly see how all the members of the orca pod are trying to bring down the whale shark,\u201d Higuera Rivas said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm41kfclz0019356mht0jvibq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWhile one orca was bumping him on the ventral (belly) side, the other one was bumping him on the head. Then eventually the whale shark is taken into an upside-down position,\u201d he added.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm41kfclz001a356m0a264v01@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            This maneuver puts the whale shark in a state seen in other animals called \u201ctonic immobility\u201d \u2014 essentially temporary paralysis resulting from extreme fear.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm41k8xa1000n356mrvxt5329@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The study authors believe the orcas are plundering the whale shark\u2019s large and nutrient-rich liver, which makes up a significant amount of the shark\u2019s body weight,<strong> <\/strong>but the researchers didn\u2019t observe the orcas consuming the organ.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm41wegig00003b6m2155xq19@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cAs apex predators, killer whales have been known to hunt sharks for their fatty livers,\u201d said Sarah Teman, a doctoral student in the University of Washington\u2019s School of Aquatic and Fishery Sciences.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm420x8on00043b6mn4cfx943@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cHowever, what makes this discovery exciting is that it\u2019s the first time we\u2019ve seen this behavior clearly documented with whale sharks, which are the largest sharks on the planet,\u201d Teman, who was not involved in the study, added in an email. \u201cIt\u2019s a pretty amazing find!\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm41kfsi1001f356m68yrwo84@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Found worldwide, orcas are the ocean\u2019s apex predators. Moctezuma, who was first spotted in 1992, has been seen hunting other elasmobranch species such as the Munk\u2019s pygmy devil ray, which is 1 meter (3.2 feet) wide, bull sharks and stingrays.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm42187mx00073b6mo04fu2bj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cMore research is needed to understand where this specialized pod fits into our knowledge of ecotypes,\u201d Teman said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm41kqrx2001w356macc964gp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In South Africa, orcas have developed <a href=\"https:\/\/cnn.com\/2024\/03\/01\/africa\/orca-kills-great-white-shark-south-africa-scn\/index.html\">techniques to kill great white sharks<\/a>, one of the ocean\u2019s most fearsome predators.
