thinners and anti-acne creams taken by tens of millions can cause alopecia, the medical term for hair loss, or cause hair follicles to shut down.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">While hair loss is natural as people age, particularly for men, Dr Zain Hasan, a Los Angeles-based anesthetist, said five common medications could be <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/health\/article-14014981\/chemotherapy-hair-loss-gel-goat-placenta.html\" rel=\"noopener\">speeding this up<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Dr Hasan warned his 636,000 followers on social media: &#8216;If you want to keep your hair, you wanna know about these five medications.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">He added in a <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/tvshowbiz\/tiktok\/index.html\" id=\"mol-b85531b0-ae5c-11ef-abda-275bcfc82d52\" class=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">TikTok<\/a> video: &#8216;These five medications, if you don&#8217;t know yourself I know you know someone that&#8217;s taking it.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The first on his list was the <span class=\"mol-style-bold\">antidepressant Wellbutrin<\/span>, a prescription drug that boosts feel good hormones in the brain to raise someone&#8217;s mood.<\/p>\n<div shown, however, that the drug can also cause hair loss in both male and female patients.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">A <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/journals.lww.com\/intclinpsychopharm\/Abstract\/2018\/01000\/Risk_of_hair_loss_with_different_antidepressants_.4.aspx\">2018 study<\/a>\u00a0that compared 1million new users on nine common antidepressants found those on bupropion (brand name, Wellbutrin) were the most likely to suffer from hair loss.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">And people have also reported the side effect anecdotally online, saying it was &#8216;terrifying&#8217; and left them &#8216;not even wanting to leave my apartment&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Around one one in 1,000 patients suffer from the side effect (or 29,000 out of the 29million who take the drug annually).<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Doctors suggest that the dopamine surge caused by the drug may also trigger hair follicles to shift into the resting phase of their growth cycle, halting further hair growth and causing\u00a0 hair loss over time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Next on Dr Hasan&#8217;s list were certain types of <span class=\"mol-style-bold\">retinoid drugs<\/span> that people take for acne, such as Accutane, or isotretinoin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Prescribed to more than one million people in the US a year, Dr Hasan said hair loss was rare with these drugs \u2014 but could happen to those taking a higher dose.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">A <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" class=\"\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jaadinternational.org\/article\/S2666-3287(22)00005-0\/fulltext#:~:text=A%20frequency%20analysis%20suggested%20that%20patients%20with%20acne%20vulgaris%20on%20%3C0.5%C2%A0mg\/kg\/d%20of%20isotretinoin%20experienced%20hair%20loss%20at%20a%20frequency%20of%203.2%25%20(n%C2%A0%3D%C2%A018\/565)%20compared%20with%20those%20on%20%E2%89%A50.5%C2%A0mg\/kg\/d%2C%20who%20experienced%20hair%20loss%20at%20a%20frequency%20of%205.7%25%20(n%C2%A0%3D%C2%A0192\/3375).\">2022 study<\/a>\u00a0on 565 people taking isotretinoin for acne found that about six percent of those on a high dose reported hair loss, compared to 3.2 percent of those on a low dose. After stopping the medication, hair grows back again.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Common side effects of the medication include tiredness, dizziness, depression and shortness of breath, doctors say. It is likely that this drug causes hair loss because it interferes with the hair growth cycle.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The final drug on Dr Hasan&#8217;s list was the <span class=\"mol-style-bold\">cancer treatment tamoxifen<\/span>, brand name Nolvadex, which is used to battle breast cancer in men and women.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">About one in three people who take the drug suffer from hair loss, which doctors say occurs because the drug lowers estrogen levels in the body \u2014 interfering with the hair&#8217;s cycle.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The hair loss becomes noticeable about six months to two years after starting on the drug, says non-profit <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" class=\"\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.breastcancer.org\/treatment-side-effects\/hair-loss\">Breastcancer.org<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">About 900,000 prescriptions for the drug are written every year, which works by slowing the growth of breast cancer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Chemotherapy drugs have also been linked to hair loss, including those for breast cancer.
