The spokesperson for the rebel groups Hassan Abdulghani refuted the accusations by the Syrian government media as \u201cbaseless lies.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm42s75jj000i356m97p5sybn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            An Aleppo University employee, speaking anonymously for security reasons, confirmed that an artillery shell hit the second floor of a dormitory with students inside at the time. A video circulating on social media, geolocated by CNN, shows young men running out of a dormitory in Aleppo University campus and carrying an injured individual.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm42s75jj000j356msp40lgq5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            On Thursday, at least 15 civilians, including six children and two women, were killed, and 36 others were injured in airstrikes and shelling on rebel-held areas in Aleppo and Idlib countryside, according to the White Helmets, a volunteer rescue group. Iranian state media said that an Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) Brigadier General Kioumars Pourhashemi was also killed in the city.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm42s7nj2000m356mins9ntsp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In a call with his Syrian counterpart to discuss the escalation, Iran\u2019s foreign minister Abbas Araghchi accused the United States and Israel of the \u201creactivation\u201d of the rebels, and \u201cstressed the continued support\u201d of Iran to the Syrian government and army.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm42wpf4o000u3b6mxfzwlc5r@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Syrian government responded with airstrikes on the city of Idlib, one of the last remaining opposition strongholds and home to more than 4 million people. The White Helmets said \u201cRussian-Syrian alliance aircraft\u201d had struck \u201cresidential neighborhoods, a gas station and a school in Idlib city\u201d on Friday, killing at least four people and injuring six others.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm42s86io000p356mjfqaf42q@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Kremlin\u2019s spokesman Dmitry Peskov called on the Syrian authorities to \u201cquickly restore order in this area and restore constitutional order.\u201d Both Iran and Russia are key allies to Syria.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm42tk78t00053b6mj9ilh7oo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Syria\u2019s civil war began during the 2011 Arab Spring as the regime suppressed a pro-democracy uprising against Assad. The country plunged into a full-scale civil war as a rebel force was formed, known as the Free Syrian Army, to combat government troops.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm42tlzb6000a3b6mna325ftv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The conflict swelled as other regional actors and world powers \u2013 from Saudi Arabia, Iran, the United States to Russia \u2013 piled in, escalating the civil war into what <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2015\/10\/13\/middleeast\/syria-civil-war\/index.html\">some observers<\/a> described as a \u201cproxy war.\u201d ISIS <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2018\/04\/08\/middleeast\/syria-one-year-after-us-strikes\/index.html\">was also able<\/a> to gain a foothold in the country before suffering significant blows.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm42tlzb6000b3b6m7pjmobkn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Since the 2020 ceasefire agreement, the conflict has remained largely dormant, with low-level clashes between the rebels and Assad\u2019s regime.
