Kennedy Jr. to lead the Department of Health and Human Services, he said in a television appearance Friday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Gottlieb maintained that there is \u201cskepticism in the Republican caucus [on RFK Jr.\u2019s nomination], more than the press is reporting right now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve had conversations, and I\u2019ve raised my concerns and I will continue to raise my concerns,\u201d Gottlieb said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/video\/2024\/11\/29\/dr-scott-gottlieb-on-rfk-he-will-cost-lives-in-this-country-if-he-follows-through-on-intentions.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">on CNBC<\/a> in response to a question about whether he\u2019s spoken with individual senators about the prospect of confirming RFK Jr.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>So far, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statnews.com\/2024\/11\/13\/gop-senators-collins-cassidy-tillis-confirming-rfk-jr-hhs-fda\/\">moderate Republicans<\/a> have held back from saying whether they will support RFK Jr.\u2019s nomination. Given the commanding Republican majority in the Senate next year, RFK Jr. would have to lose four Republican votes and fail to sway a single Democrat in order for his nomination to fail.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The former commissioner listed a number of potential issues that RFK Jr.\u2019s nomination could face. Among them: Given his views on the U.S. food industry, senators with large agricultural interests could withhold their support, as could anti-abortion senators given RFK Jr.\u2019s past support of abortion rights, along with \u201cpublic health-minded\u201d senators given his skepticism of \u2014 some critics say opposition to \u2014 childhood vaccines.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Gottlieb expressed skepticism that Congress could try to put guardrails around RFK Jr. by attaching conditions to funding for HHS. Here\u2019s who RFK Jr. could bring along for the ride\u00a0<\/a><br \/>\n\t\t<\/h3>\n<\/aside>\n<p>Gottlieb also implied that there could be a chasm between RFK Jr.\u2019s beliefs about childhood vaccines and those of President-elect Trump himself.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think the president wants to see a resurgence of measles, wants to see a resurgence of whooping cough in this country, wants to see, God forbid, cases of polio in this country.\u2026 I think if RFK follows through on his intentions, and I believe he will, and I believe he can, it will cost lives in this country,\u201d Gottlieb said.<\/p>\n<p>Gottlieb warned that RFK Jr. could take specific actions harmful to public health, including by disbanding a vaccine advisory committee to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and then re-creating it stacked with like-minded people and by frustrating funding for the Vaccines for Children program, which provides free vaccines when their health insurance won\u2019t pay for them. Gottlieb called the team RFK Jr. is building \u201cvery experienced,\u201d and pointed to individuals with ties to the anti-vaccine group RFK Jr. founded, the Children\u2019s Health Defense.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese guys are capable, I think they are deadly serious and have been very clear about their intentions, and I think sometimes you have to take people at their word,\u201d Gottlieb said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Beyond his criticism of RFK Jr., Gottlieb also called David Weldon, Trump\u2019s pick to lead the CDC, a \u201cvery committed anti-vaxxer.\u201d For the first time, following a change by Congress, that post is subject to confirmation by the Senate.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Tensions have been high between Gottlieb and Trump\u2019s picks for his new administration for a long time.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.statnews.com\/2024\/10\/07\/calley-means-casey-means-conservative-voices-of-chronic-disease-crisis\/\">Calley Means<\/a>, an adviser to RFK Jr., has accused Gottlieb of working to \u201cundermine President Trump\u2019s reform agenda\u201d and of \u201cshowing disloyalty to President Trump.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>On Friday, Means <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/calleymeans\/status\/1862568776862245321\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">posted on X<\/a> in response to Gottlieb\u2019s CNBC appearance that, \u201cTrust in public health has plummeted due to government officials like Scott going straight from the FDA to the Pfizer boardroom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Even before RFK Jr. rose to prominence, Vivek Ramaswamy, who is now running a process aimed at dramatically cutting government spending, made a dig at Gottlieb during an early presidential debate in December 2023.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe leader, the commissioner of the FDA ends up on the board of Pfizer\u2026. I don\u2019t care if it\u2019s a Republican or Democrat.
