Credit: NASA<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>When the <a href=\"https:\/\/hubblesite.org\/home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hubble Space Telescope<\/a> was launched in 1990, one of its main objectives was to pin down the universe\u2019s expansion rate. <\/p>\n<p>Before Hubble, estimates of the universe\u2019s age ranged wildly from 10 to 20 billion years \u2014 a huge uncertainty. <\/p>\n<p>Thanks to Hubble\u2019s observations of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.earth.com\/news\/expansion-rate-of-the-universe-confirmed-by-jwst\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cepheid variable stars<\/a> \u2014 stars that pulsate at regular intervals and serve as cosmic mileposts \u2014 we now have a more precise age of about 13.8 billion years.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-webb-telescope-to-the-rescue\">Webb telescope to the rescue?<\/h2>\n<p>Some scientists wondered if the discrepancies in measurements were due to errors in Hubble\u2019s data. Maybe, they thought, the way Hubble measured distances had some hidden flaws. <\/p>\n<p>Then came the James Webb Space Telescope (<a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/mission\/webb\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Webb<\/a>), launched to great fanfare as the successor to Hubble. Webb\u2019s infrared observations of Cepheids matched Hubble\u2019s optical data perfectly. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cCombining Webb and Hubble gives us the best of both worlds. We find that the Hubble measurements remain reliable as we climb farther along the cosmic distance ladder,\u201d Riess explained.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-hubble-vs-webb-vs-expansion\">Hubble vs. Webb vs. expansion<\/h2>\n<p>Despite the new data, the tension between measurements remains. The Hubble and Webb telescopes confirm one universe expansion rate, based on observations of the local universe.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, observations from the early universe, like those from the Planck satellite\u2019s mapping of the cosmic microwave background radiation, suggest another. <\/p>\n<p>This leaves cosmologists scratching their heads. Is there something about the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.earth.com\/news\/universe-expansion-rate-dark-energy-measured-11-billion-years-ago\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">fabric of space<\/a> we don\u2019t yet understand? Could that be a supernova?\u201d the team wondered. <\/p>\n<p>It turned out to be a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.earth.com\/news\/webb-travels-back-in-time-to-better-understand-supernovae-science\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Type Ia supernova<\/a>, an explosion of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.earth.com\/news\/white-dwarf-stars-may-be-billions-of-years-older-than-estimated\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">white dwarf star<\/a>, magnified and split into multiple images by the gravitational lensing effect of the intervening galaxy cluster.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-is-gravitational-lensing\">What is gravitational lensing?<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.earth.com\/news\/rare-carousel-lens-galaxy-alignment-reveals-dark-matter-secrets\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Gravitational lensing<\/a> is important to this experiment. The lens, consisting of a cluster of galaxies situated between the supernova and us, bends the supernova\u2019s light into multiple images. <\/p>\n<p>This effect not only magnifies the supernova but also allows scientists to measure the time delays between the images, providing another way to calculate the Hubble constant.<\/p>\n<p>Their analyses confirmed that these dots corresponded to an exploding star with rare qualities. <\/p>\n<p>The team\u2019s work provided a Hubble constant value of 75.4 kilometers per second per megaparsec, plus 8.1 or minus 5.5. For context, one megaparsec is about 3.26 million light-years. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur team\u2019s results are impactful: The Hubble constant value matches other measurements in the local universe, and is somewhat in tension with values obtained when the universe was young,\u201d Frye concluded.<\/p>\n<p>Another strikeout\u2026 add Brenda Frye to the long list of brilliant minds still probing the universe for an answer to Hubble tension.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-this-is-getting-sad-now-what\">This is getting sad, now what?<\/h2>\n<p>So, where does this leave us? <\/p>\n<p>The Hubble Tension isn\u2019t going away. It might be telling us that there\u2019s new physics waiting to be discovered. <\/p>\n<p>Perhaps our understanding of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.earth.com\/news\/dark-energy-could-explain-the-rapid-expansion-of-the-early-universe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">dark energy<\/a>, dark matter, or other fundamental forces needs to be revised. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to find out if we are missing something on how to connect the beginning of the universe and the present day,\u201d Riess pointed out. <\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s possible that new theories or modifications to existing ones could bridge the gap.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-shaking-things-up-with-new-theories\">Shaking things up with new theories<\/h2>\n<p>Could the solution lie in something entirely unexpected? Perhaps there\u2019s a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.earth.com\/news\/dark-matter-may-consist-of-particles-that-travel-faster-than-light\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">new particle or force<\/a> that affects the expansion rate. Or maybe the nature of dark energy changes over time. <\/p>\n<p>Some theories even propose the existence of extra dimensions or modifications to gravity at large scales. It\u2019s also worth considering that the universe might not be uniform in all directions. <\/p>\n<p>If there are variations in the density of matter and energy across vast distances, this could affect expansion rates in ways we haven\u2019t fully accounted for. <\/p>\n<p>Maybe everyone is completely off base and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.earth.com\/news\/study-dark-matter-does-not-exist-and-the-universe-is-27-billion-years-old\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">dark matter doesn\u2019t even exist<\/a>? Or maybe we\u2019re looking in the wrong place \u2014 what if the answers can be found by looking for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.earth.com\/news\/scientists-are-now-searching-for-dark-matter-inside-old-earth-rocks-minerals-crystals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">dark matter in rocks on Earth<\/a>?<\/p>\n<p>One thing\u2019s for sure: the cosmos isn\u2019t giving up its secrets easily. But that\u2019s part of the thrill of science. Every answer leads to new questions.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-hubble-constant-hubble-tension-mysterious-universe\">Hubble constant, Hubble tension, mysterious universe<\/h2>\n<p>In the end, the universe is reminding us that there\u2019s still so much we don\u2019t know. The quest to figure out how fast our universe is expanding has led to some fascinating discoveries and even more intriguing questions. <\/p>\n<p>Scientists like Adam Riess and Brenda Frye have used powerful tools like the Hubble and James Webb Space Telescopes to measure the Hubble constant with increasing precision. <\/p>\n<p>Their efforts confirm that the local universe is expanding at a certain rate, but this doesn\u2019t quite line up with measurements from the early universe.<\/p>\n<p>This mismatch, known as the Hubble Tension, suggests there might be something we\u2019re missing in our understanding of the cosmos. Maybe there are new physics to uncover, or perhaps our current models need some tweaking. <\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s clear is that the universe isn\u2019t giving up its secrets easily, and that keeps things exciting for astronomers and physicists alike.<\/p>\n<p>As we look ahead, upcoming missions like NASA\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/roman.gsfc.nasa.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope<\/a> and ESA\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/Science_Exploration\/Space_Science\/Euclid\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Euclid mission<\/a> offer hope for new insights. Until then, we can marvel at the fact that we\u2019re part of an ever-expanding universe that\u2019s still full of surprises.<\/p>\n<p>The full study was published in the <em><a
