Garner was connected to an active investigation by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, sources told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wnct.com\/news\/mccoll-mayor-dies-in-crash-he-was-being-investigated-by-sled-and-pursued-by-deputy-for-own-well-being-officials-say\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:WBTW;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \"><u>WBTW<\/u><\/a>, though details of the investigation are not clear.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">\u201cThe pursuit not related to any laws being broken. The pursuit was taking place in an effort to protect the well-being of Mr. Garner,\u201d the coroner said, adding that more information will be released in the coming days.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">On Nov. 21, just five days before the crash, police chief Bob Hale and his five officers resigned from their post. Hale announced the departure in a Facebook <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wbtw.com\/news\/pee-dee\/marlboro-county\/resignations-leave-mccoll-police-department-with-no-officers\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:post;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \"><u>post<\/u><\/a>, where he said he left because of \u201crepeated acts of harassment\u201d and \u201cpersonal attacks\u201d on his character by a town council member.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">Hale added that the council member cut the police\u2019s funding upon assuming his position.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">\u201cThis lack of investment hampered our ability to operate at the standard the citizens of the Town of McColl rightfully expect and deserve,\u201d he said in the post.<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0\">The McColl police department has been mired with conflict before.
