I could discern a hint of what Big Mike bananas from 100 years ago might have tasted like,&#8221; said Sun, the founder of the cryptocurrency platform Tron.<\/p>\n<aside id=\"ad-backstage-wrap\" class=\"ad-wrap backstage\" aria-label=\"advertisement\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>Big Mike bananas \u2014 a common translation of the flavorful Gros Michel banana variety \u2014 were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atlasobscura.com\/articles\/gros-michel-bananas\">once ubiquitous<\/a> and have now become virtually impossible to find. <\/p>\n<p>Sun wrote that as thanks to Shah Alam \u2014 the 74-year-old Bangladeshi fruit stand employee who originally sold the banana for just 25 cents \u2014 he would purchase 100,000 bananas to be distributed for free to Alam&#8217;s customers.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/11\/27\/nyregion\/banana-auction-sothebys.html\"><em>New York Times<\/em><\/a>, however, Alam noted a number of logistical issues with Sun&#8217;s proposal.<\/p>\n<p>The profit on bananas is relatively low, Alam told the paper \u2014 only about $6,000 on a purchase of 100,000 bananas. And Alam is an employee of the fruit stand, not its owner.<\/p>\n<p>His salary of $12\/hour during his 12-hour workday, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/11\/27\/nyregion\/banana-auction-sothebys.html\">which affords him<\/a> a shared basement apartment in the Bronx, would not be affected by a bulk novelty sale.<\/p>\n<p>This is not Sun&#8217;s first venture into multimillion-dollar bids. In 2019, he won a <a href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/justin-sun-a-chinese-blockchain-entrepreneur-won-warren-buffetts-charity-lunch-172032176.html?guccounter=1&amp;guce_referrer=aHR0cHM6Ly9lbi53aWtpcGVkaWEub3JnLw&amp;guce_referrer_sig=AQAAAKWJVM8foq7vKareSIgEeuHwsMLmYAMOPOJSMq40o1HwXr1JRyMv1HcvftBAqNVO2vTS9AN9ixdxmHYHhfkppMHZeqfZlZ6QIS1Bm004LHOXq-_sPZYjOP9_hlDgm_USkTLjmOykAGDU6ftsgTTJVxbcDScMjhWcy-ONIyFs3hxe\">$4.8 million bid<\/a> to have lunch with Berkshire Hathaway CEO Warren Buffett.
