That&#8217;s a break from the NRO&#8217;s traditional strategy, which relied on a few highly capable, but very expensive and difficult to replace, eyes in the sky.<\/p>\n<p>We don&#8217;t know much about the &#8220;proliferated architecture&#8221; satellites; the activities and abilities of NRO craft tend to be classified. However, these new spacecraft are believed to be <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/science\/2024\/11\/nro-chief-you-cant-hide-from-our-new-swarm-of-spacex-built-spy-satellites\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/science\/2024\/11\/nro-chief-you-cant-hide-from-our-new-swarm-of-spacex-built-spy-satellites\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"noopener\">based on SpaceX&#8217;s Starlink satellites<\/a>, with some fancy, classified sensors attached.<\/p>\n<div id=\"slice-container-newsletterForm-articleInbodyContent-t6E8EiGZnNupZMwn5mChiS\" class=\"slice-container newsletter-inbodyContent-slice newsletterForm-articleInbodyContent-t6E8EiGZnNupZMwn5mChiS slice-container-newsletterForm\">\n<div data-hydrate=\"true\" class=\"newsletter-form__wrapper newsletter-form__wrapper--inbodyContent\">\n<div class=\"newsletter-form__container\">\n<section class=\"newsletter-form__top-bar\"\/>\n<section class=\"newsletter-form__main-section\">\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">Breaking space news, the latest updates on rocket launches, skywatching events and more!<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>To plan, the Falcon 9 first stage launched on Saturday cawme back to Earth about eight minutes after liftoff for a landing on the SpaceX drone ship<strong> &#8220;<\/strong>Of Course I Still Love You&#8221; in the Pacific Ocean.<\/p>\n<p>It was the first launch and landing for this particular booster, according to <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.spacex.com\/launches\/mission\/?missionId=nrol-126\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.spacex.com\/launches\/mission\/?missionId=nrol-126\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"noopener\">SpaceX&#8217;s mission description<\/a>. The Starlink satellites were deployed into low Earth orbit about 62 minutes after liftoff. The mission description didn&#8217;t say when the NRO craft were to separate from the Falcon 9&#8217;s upper stage.<\/p>\n<p>The first four proliferated architecture missions also lifted off atop Falcon 9 rockets this year \u2014 <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/spacex-nro-spy-satellites-nrol-146-launch\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/spacex-nro-spy-satellites-nrol-146-launch\">NROL-146<\/a> in May, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/spacex-nrol-186-spy-satellite-launch\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/spacex-nrol-186-spy-satellite-launch\">NROL-186<\/a> in June, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/spacex-nrol-113-spy-satellites-launch\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/spacex-nrol-113-spy-satellites-launch\">NROL-113<\/a> in September and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/spacex-nrol-167-launch-spy-satellites\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/spacex-nrol-167-launch-spy-satellites\">NROL-167<\/a> in October.<\/p>\n<p>NROL-167 marked the 100th flight of 2024 for a Falcon 9, extending SpaceX&#8217;s record for most liftoffs in a single year. The 2024 tally for the workhorse rocket now stands at 118.
