(AP) \u2014 President-elect Donald Trump on Saturday threatened 100% tariffs against a bloc of nine nations if they act to undermine the U.S. dollar.<\/p>\n<p>His threat was directed at countries in the so-called BRIC alliance, which consists of Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran and the United Arab Emirates.<\/p>\n<p>Turkey, Azerbaijan and Malaysia have applied to become members and several other countries have expressed interest in joining. <\/p>\n<p>While the U.S. dollar is by far the most-used currency in global business and has survived past challenges to its preeminence, members of the alliance and other developing nations say they are fed up with America\u2019s <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/climate-change-funding-imf-world-bank-paris-5adddd32452f548a71a55f802191b04d\">dominance of the global financial system<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>The dollar represents roughly 58% of the world\u2019s foreign exchange reserves, <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/data.imf.org\/?sk=e6a5f467-c14b-4aa8-9f6d-5a09ec4e62a4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to the IMF<\/a><\/span> and major commodities like oil are still primarily bought and sold using dollars. The dollar\u2019s dominance is threatened, however, with BRICS\u2019 growing share of GDP and the alliance\u2019s intent to trade in non-dollar currencies \u2014 a process known as de-dollarization.<\/p>\n<p>Trump, in a Truth Social post, said: \u201cWe require a commitment from these Countries that they will neither create a new BRICS Currency, nor back any other Currency to replace the mighty U.S. Dollar or, they will face 100% Tariffs, and should expect to say goodbye to selling into the wonderful U.S. Economy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At a summit of BRIC nations in October, <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/russia-putin-brics-summit-china-india-d672be9b1ec2ffd0fba608e8a6aca790\">Russian President Vladimir Putin accused the U.S. of \u201cweaponizing\u201d the dollar<\/a><\/span> and described it as a \u201cbig mistake.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"Infobox\" data-module=\"\" data-gtm-region=\"What to know about Trump's second term: Staffing the administration: Here are the people Trump has picked for key positions so far.
