{"id":132165,"date":"2024-12-01T15:38:59","date_gmt":"2024-12-01T08:38:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hotvideos24.online\/?p=132165"},"modified":"2024-12-01T15:38:59","modified_gmt":"2024-12-01T08:38:59","slug":"as-hurricane-season-ends-researchers-take-stock-of-unexpected-pattern","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hotvideos24.online\/?p=132165","title":{"rendered":"As hurricane season ends, researchers take stock of unexpected pattern"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n     data-ad-layout-key=\"-fb+5w+4e-db+86\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"7910942971\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"summary-box\" data-testid=\"summary-box\">\n<div class=\"summary-box__content\">\n<h2 class=\"summary-box__headline\">The Summary<\/h2>\n<ul class=\"summary-box__items\">\n<li>The Atlantic hurricane season officially ends Saturday.<\/li>\n<li>Its pattern of activity surprised forecasters: The season got busy early and produced strong, late storms, but what is usually considered the peak period was quiet.<\/li>\n<li>Climate change most likely made the observed storms more severe.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"\">A strange, damaging hurricane season comes to its official end Saturday, and forecasters are taking stock of its many surprises.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cEvery year there\u2019s one or two things that make me scratch my head, and this year I was doing more head-scratching than normal,\u201d said Philip Klotzbach, a meteorologist at Colorado State University who specializes in Atlantic hurricane forecasts.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Most forecasters predicted a hyperactive hurricane season as early as April, with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration issuing its highest-ever forecast.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">In the end, 18 named storms, 11 hurricanes and five major hurricanes formed \u2014 at the lower end of the range most forecasters expected, though still an above-normal and \u201cextremely active\u201d season.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">What surprised researchers was the bizarre way the season played out. It got off to a roaring start when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/science\/science-news\/hurricane-beryl-records-category-4-storm-caribbean-rcna159723\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hurricane Beryl became the first Category 5 storm seen in the Atlantic Ocean in June<\/a>. But from mid-August through early September, all went quiet. That\u2019s usually when the season reaches its peak \u2014\u00a0around Sept. 10. It went from nothing to Helene and a bunch of storms in the east Atlantic and Milton.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Researchers are studying what led to the strange pattern to boost their understanding of the factors that drive hurricanes and improve future forecasts.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The reasons researchers predicted a busy, dangerous hurricane season this spring were record high ocean temperatures in the Atlantic and a likelihood that La Ni\u00f1a, a natural pattern of variability, would take hold. Ocean heat provides fuel for hurricanes, and it can enable them to intensify more quickly. La Ni\u00f1a is associated with hurricanes because it often decreases stability in the atmosphere.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cEarly on, we thought it would be the busiest season on record,\u201d Klotzbach said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Although ocean temperatures remained at or near record highs in the North Atlantic, La Ni\u00f1a did not develop strongly, said Matthew Rosencrans, the lead hurricane forecaster at NOAA\u2019s Climate Prediction Center, a division of the National Weather Service.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Other factors most likely combined to cause the surprising lull in activity, as well.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">About 60% of hurricanes form as a result of Africa\u2019s tropical monsoon season, which <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/experts-predicted-more-hurricanes-in-the-caribbean-this-summer-where-are-the-missing-storms-238824\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">draws moisture into an area called the Sahel<\/a>. But this year, the monsoon developed in a different location.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">&#8220;The monsoon ended up so far north and was so intense it ended up in places that hadn\u2019t had rain in 45 years,\u201d Rosencrans said. The change dampened tropical storm development.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">A separate climate pattern called the Madden Julian oscillation, which is a grouping of storms that travels near the equator, most likely also contributed, slowing storm development in early September and then allowing hurricanes to take off later in the month, Rosencrans said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Researchers will spend the winter investigating which factors had the most influence via climate and weather models.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cIt\u2019s an opportunity to learn, to look at the system and have the Earth teach us something new,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Despite the midseason break from tropical storms, 2024 set several records. And seven hurricanes formed in the Atlantic after Sept. 25, the most in recorded history.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Hurricane Milton <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/science\/science-news\/why-hurricane-milton-produced-strong-tornadoes-rcna175049\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">set a record for tornado warnings in Florida<\/a> and spawned dozens of tornadoes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Research suggests climate change made Helene and Milton worse. Both hurricanes went through a rapid intensification process, in which a hurricane\u2019s sustained wind speeds increase by at least 35 mph over 24 hours. The trend has become more common as global temperatures rise.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">What\u2019s more, scientists who study the influence of climate change on weather found that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldweatherattribution.org\/yet-another-hurricane-wetter-windier-and-more-destructive-because-of-climate-change\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rainfall in one-day events like Milton is now about 20% to 30% more intense because of climate change<\/a>. The researchers, with the World Weather Attribution project, also determined that Milton\u2019s wind speeds were most likely 10% stronger because of climate change\u2019s influence. However, a greater proportion of named storms will be expected to become hurricanes, and a larger share of those hurricanes will reach Category 4 or 5.
