And he\u2019ll do it as part of the most high-profile dispute <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/11\/26\/politics\/alito-kagan-supreme-court-arguments-analysis\/index.html\">on the docket<\/a> this session.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm407dtbu000c3b6m2btni346@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/06\/24\/politics\/supreme-court-to-decide-whether-states-can-restrict-gender-affirming-care-for-minors\/index.html\">The case<\/a>, <em>US v. Skrmetti<\/em>, challenges a Tennessee law that bans treatments, including hormone therapy and puberty blockers, for transgender minors and imposes civil penalties on doctors who violate the prohibitions. Some two dozen <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/06\/06\/politics\/states-banned-medical-transitioning-for-transgender-youth-dg\/index.html\">similar laws<\/a> have been enacted in recent years in Republican-led states.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm407dtbu000d3b6mzqoauyqf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The high court\u2019s ruling could have a cascading effect, not just for the families and physicians whose lives are deeply intertwined with its outcome \u2013 and who await Strangio\u2019s appearance at the lectern with guarded hope \u2013 but also for the next chapter of civil rights law in the United States.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm407dtbu000e3b6mzlpyzfhq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            For Strangio, the professional path that\u2019s led to this moment \u2013 in which he\u2019ll have 15 minutes to present his argument to the justices \u2013 cannot be unwoven from his life outside the courtroom.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm407dtbu000f3b6mr3inylvn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt is not lost on me that I will be standing there at the lectern at the Supreme Court in part because I was able to have access to the medical care that is the very subject of the case that we\u2019re litigating,\u201d he said recently.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm407dtbu000g3b6mfpoxl4ma@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The justices will decide whether Tennessee\u2019s ban on gender-affirming care for children and adolescents violates the Constitution\u2019s Equal Protection Clause, a question that could allow a majority of the court to hold that laws targeting transgender people are unconstitutional and discriminatory.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm407dtbu000h3b6md4hmak6m@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A ruling along those lines would give civil rights lawyers a powerful tool for fighting anti-trans laws on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/11\/25\/politics\/nancy-mace-transgender-rights-comments\/index.html\">bathroom access<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/05\/12\/sport\/naia-ncaa-transgender-ban-sports\/index.html\">school sports<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edweek.org\/leadership\/pronouns-for-trans-nonbinary-students-the-states-with-laws-that-restrict-them-in-schools\/2023\/06\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pronouns<\/a>. Below his slightly mussed hair, the 42-year-old\u2019s clear blue eyes were sharp and determined as he spoke with CNN last month.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm407dtbu000j3b6m2m0zbp8a@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Much of his stoicism, Strangio admits, comes from being remarkably good at compartmentalizing. But he doesn\u2019t expect it to last.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm407dtbu000k3b6mfknjv7b2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI\u2019ll probably have a nervous breakdown on December 5,\u201d the day after he argues before the court, he quips.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm407dtbu000l3b6misqo4r0y@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            For now, he\u2019s laser-focused on putting forward the best legal argument he can, driven by a visceral understanding of just how much is at stake.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm407dtbu000m3b6m7wro3e3i@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cEvery aspect of gender-affirming care that has transformed my life,\u201d he said, \u201cI\u2019m keenly aware that I want to preserve the ability for other people to access that care.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm407dtbu000o3b6mzt6a1s8k@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Supreme Court could take months to hand down its decision in <em>Skrmetti<\/em> \u2013 in recent years, major rulings haven\u2019t been announced until the end of the court\u2019s term in June. And ultimately, Strangio concedes, so much of the case\u2019s outcome will be out of his control.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm407dtbu000p3b6mnftpha3b@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In Tennessee, the mom of a 10-year-old trans girl who\u2019s been caught in the legal melee over the state\u2019s ban on gender-affirming care told CNN she\u2019s less comfortable with surrendering to the unknowns.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm407dtbu000q3b6mkk3ujkg1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe were not excited to hear that the Supreme Court agreed to hear (the case),\u201d said Alexis, a lifelong Tennessean whom CNN has agreed to identify by only her first name to protect her family in what she described as a climate of fear and danger around her daughter\u2019s gender identity.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm407dtbu000r3b6m12g3q5ir@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt made me very nervous because (the ruling) would be such a final decision for everyone in this state and set a precedent for so many other states.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm407dtbu000s3b6mao14p2l7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Indeed, gender-affirming care has become <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/11\/26\/us\/missouri-transgender-children-care-ban-judge\/index.html\">the latest fault line<\/a> in a growing American cultural rift, with Republican lawmakers who support Tennessee\u2019s ban saying decisions about gender-affirming care should be made in adulthood.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm407dtbu000t3b6mf8moui19@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Likewise, supporters of such bans say they\u2019re trying to protect children, arguing kids aren\u2019t legally allowed to have sex, get married or make other life-changing decisions \u2013 even with parental consent \u2013 and these laws extend those kind of child protections. <a href=\"https:\/\/cass.independent-review.uk\/home\/publications\/final-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Some cite a divisive report by<\/a> the UK\u2019s National Health Service that found there is \u201cno good evidence on the long-term outcomes of (clinical) interventions\u201d for gender-affirming care, suggesting more research <a href=\"https:\/\/law.yale.edu\/sites\/default\/files\/documents\/integrity-project_cass-response.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">is needed<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm407dtbu000u3b6mpva4f6dy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Meanwhile, parents of trans children and legal opponents often argue such laws, in addition to violating the civil rights of trans youth, run afoul of parents\u2019 rights to make decisions about their child\u2019s medical care. Major medical associations \u2013 including the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ama-assn.org\/delivering-care\/population-care\/advocating-lgbtq-community\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">American Medical Association<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychiatry.org\/File%20Library\/About-APA\/Organization-Documents-Policies\/Policies\/Position-2018-Discrimination-Against-Transgender-and-Gender-Diverse-Individuals.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">American Psychiatric Association<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/pediatrics.aappublications.org\/content\/pediatrics\/early\/2018\/09\/13\/peds.2018-2162.full.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">American Academy of Pediatrics<\/a> \u2013 agree gender-affirming care is <a href=\"https:\/\/healthlaw.org\/gender-affirming-care-for-youth-is-good-health-care\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">clinically appropriate<\/a> for children and adults, and research shows <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/32345113\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the risk of suicide<\/a> is high among youth who experience gender dysphoria.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm407dtbu000v3b6m9qm3mg9s@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            That this week\u2019s hearing comes on the heels of former President Donald Trump\u2019s reelection following a campaign <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/10\/26\/politics\/fact-check-trump-rogan-children-gender-affirming-surgeries\/index.html\">marked<\/a> by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/10\/18\/politics\/trump-transgender-attack-ads-harris\/index.html\">anti-trans attacks<\/a>, Alexis said, has made it all so much worse. And the prospect of knowing she may have to wait months for the Supreme Court\u2019s decision to learn whether her daughter is entitled to the same constitutional protections she enjoys is tough.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm407dtbu000w3b6m9oskd9j9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            So, for now \u2013 as Strangio prepares to defend those protections, often out loud at home and to the chagrin of his own preteen \u2013 Alexis told CNN she\u2019s focused on preserving her kid\u2019s childhood for as long as she can.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm407dtbu000x3b6mee85oun7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe\u2019ve told her that there are people in the world who don\u2019t like it when people change their gender \u2026 but we haven\u2019t really talked to her about the laws around it,\u201d Alexis said. \u201cShe\u2019s not ashamed of being trans. It\u2019s very normal to her \u2026 we\u2019re just trying to kind of hold on to that as long as possible.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm407dtbu000z3b6mgposrkt0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Strangio steps into history as his very existence as a trans man has become a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/11\/20\/politics\/congress-transgender-bathrooms-debate\/index.html\">lightning rod<\/a>. And his public profile \u2013 both in the legal system and as a vocal advocate for trans rights \u2013 has come at a cost.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm407dtbu00103b6md8zlo5ez@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            He\u2019s frequently the subject of hate-fueled, transphobic attacks online and admits he\u2019s been concerned at times about his family\u2019s safety. But the attacks, Strangio told CNN, also underscore the need for his work.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm407dtbu00113b6mqky7ivrq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cOne of the things I find really powerful about being a trans person in this work is (when) I\u2019m deposing \u2018experts\u2019 whose entire theory of transness is that it makes people miserable, but they have to be confronted with me,\u201d he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm407dtbu00123b6mmkdpn5yu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI am distinctly not a miserable person, and I do not approach this work from a place of being downtrodden.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm407dtbu00133b6mrda0mqxv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Instead, he\u2019s dedicated his career to advocating for the fullness of what it means to be transgender and expanding understanding, equality and access for the next generation.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm407dtbu00143b6m8macb590@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Since joining the ACLU, Strangio has been a central part of legal teams that have secured major victories for LGBTQ Americans before the Supreme Court, including the right to <a href=\"https:\/\/supreme.justia.com\/cases\/federal\/us\/576\/644\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">marriage<\/a> equality and a 2020 ruling that held LGBTQ discrimination in the workplace <a href=\"https:\/\/supreme.justia.com\/cases\/federal\/us\/590\/17-1618\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">violates the Civil Rights Act of 1964<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm407dtbu00153b6mfttxlf30@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            With hindsight, Strangio\u2019s career can appear like it\u2019s been hurtling toward this week\u2019s Supreme Court appearance. In the interview, Esseks offered his favorite sink-or-swim prompt: Tell me about a time you saw a problem and you did something to address it.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm407dtbu001a3b6mc8tnd20u@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Without missing a beat, Esseks recalled, Strangio explained that trans people \u2013 especially immigrants \u2013 are often denied bail because they don\u2019t have the family or social connections to vouch for their return to court.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm407dtbu001b3b6ma35d99et@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            So, Strangio partnered with the late <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2020\/04\/01\/us\/lorena-borjas-transgender-activist-covid19-death-trnd\/index.html\">Lorena Borjas<\/a>, a Latina trans and immigrant rights activist in New York City, to start the Lorena Borjas Community Fund, which provides financial assistance so LGBTQ immigrants can post bail and cover legal expenses.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm407dtbu001c3b6m0rajrm95@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Esseks was blown away by Strangio\u2019s answer, he told CNN, and his ability to marry empathy with action.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm407dtbu001d3b6m3lmw58ps@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt\u2019s one thing to have an idea; it\u2019s another thing to make it happen,\u201d Esseks said. \u201cI was like, \u2018OK, I need people on the team that can make stuff happen.\u2019\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm407dtbu001e3b6m5c5pahxg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Esseks and Strangio are now co-directors of the ACLU\u2019s LGBTQ &amp; HIV project, with Strangio among the architects of the organization\u2019s legal strategy to challenge anti-trans bills across the country.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm407dtbu001f3b6mv88ufzyk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Esseks often gets asked, he said, whether the ACLU tapped Strangio to present its case before the Supreme Court because he\u2019s trans.<em> <\/em>He scoffs at the suggestion.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm407dtbu001g3b6mng79p5hu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cChase has more experience litigating this question of the constitutionality of bans on health care for trans adolescents than any other legal advocate in the country,\u201d he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm407dtbu001h3b6m90ny5nvw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cChase is there because he\u2019s an incredible advocate, incredibly smart, and someone who is the most experienced lawyer on this issue \u2026 and in addition to that, he\u2019s a trans guy.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm407dtbu001k3b6mhcleid1f@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            After briefly meeting Strangio last year in Tennessee, Alexis said she\u2019s hopeful his experience arguing these types of cases proves invaluable Wednesday.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm40a125b000w3b6meifq3va1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But she has less faith in the American legal system.\n    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cm407iuq4002m3b6mjryuku1v@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"devastating-for-patients-and-families\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n        \u2018Devastating for patients and families\u2019<br \/>\n<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm407dtbu001l3b6ma4lt7sj2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            To that end, Alexis has made contingency plans. Her family recently traveled to California to consult with a doctor about starting her daughter on puberty blockers.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm407dtbu001m3b6mii35k2lr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Her child has asked, \u201cWhy do we have to go there instead of to my doctor?\u201d Alexis recalled, referring to their pediatrician in Tennessee. \u201cI just say, \u2018If you tell me you need this kind of health care, we\u2019re going to find the best in the world. We\u2019re going to take you to the best doctors that we can find to help.\u2019\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm407dtbu001n3b6mr2wxhcb7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Depending on the <em>Skrmetti<\/em> ruling, Alexis said, her family may leave Tennessee for a state where the law doesn\u2019t criminalize gender-affirming care. She\u2019d try to make it all seem like an adventure for her girl, she said, because explaining Tennessee had outlawed her health care because she\u2019s trans would feel like too heavy a burden for a 10-year-old.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm407dtbu001o3b6miiy1cvuz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Supreme Court ruling also could be life-altering for physicians like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/01\/30\/us\/texas-transgender-records-georgia-clinic\/index.html\">Dr. Izzy Lowell,<\/a> whose telehealth practice, QueerMed, provides hormone therapy and other services for transgender and nonbinary people. Early this year, the practice refused the Texas attorney general\u2019s request for medical records of Texas minors who\u2019d received its care.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm407dtbu001p3b6myo60lxeb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Especially since Trump\u2019s reelection, Lowell said her consultations with trans patients and their families have often devolved into a series of existential questions: What am I going to do? How am I going to survive the next four years in this country?\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm407dtbu001q3b6mtt94tal6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cToday, I have someone traveling 800 miles from Florida to a state without a ban \u2013 and that\u2019s just for a 15-minute visit,\u201d she told CNN last week. \u201cIt\u2019s absolutely devastating for patients and families, and it\u2019s just so misguided.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm407dtbu001r3b6mvw0zmbd7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Like many physicians, Lowell said she hesitates to promise a successful outcome in <em>Skrmetti<\/em>. But she will be keeping tabs on Strangio\u2019s 15 minutes this Wednesday.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm40970h400003b6mf588seh3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The halls of the Supreme Court are as majestic as they are imposing \u2013 from the soaring marble columns that bolster its fa\u00e7ade to the heavy velvet drapes that encircle the justices\u2019 chambers. That promise, Strangio said, is truly what\u2019s at stake when he walks into the courtroom at 1 First St NE later this week.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm407dtbu001x3b6mvboe9ad1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI think about all of the arguments that have that have been held in the Supreme Court over just the basic dignity of people.
