A recent report about the super-slim model, nicknamed the iPhone 17 Air, had lots of details about a phone that will look different from any previous iPhone. But there were also nuggets about how the rest of the series will be different.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"embed-base image-embed embed-0\" role=\"presentation\"><figcaption><fbs-accordion><\/p>\n<p class=\"color-body light-text\">Will the iPhone 17 Pro look radically different from the iPhone 16 Pro?<\/p>\n<p><\/fbs-accordion><small>\u00a9 2024 Bloomberg Finance LP<\/small><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>First of all, there\u2019ll be no more titanium Pro iPhones, according to a report in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theinformation.com\/articles\/apples-thin-iphone-has-no-physical-sims-that-could-dampen-china-sales\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"color-link\" title=\"https:\/\/www.theinformation.com\/articles\/apples-thin-iphone-has-no-physical-sims-that-could-dampen-china-sales\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.theinformation.com\/articles\/apples-thin-iphone-has-no-physical-sims-that-could-dampen-china-sales\" aria-label=\"The Information\">The Information<\/a>. This may come as a surprise, given that titanium was only introduced in 2023 with the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max, and was a very big deal.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"embed-base color-body color-body-border link-embed embed-2 link-embed--long-title\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/davidphelan\/2024\/11\/30\/apples-own-black-friday-event-iphone-15-and-ipad-offers-go-live-full-details\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Apple\u2019s Cyber Monday Event iPhone 15 And iPad Offers Still Live: Latest Details\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"forbesEmbedly:https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/davidphelan\/2024\/11\/30\/apples-own-black-friday-event-iphone-15-and-ipad-offers-go-live-full-details\/\"><span class=\"link-embed__info\"><span class=\"link-embed__provider\">Forbes<\/span><span class=\"link-embed__title\">Apple\u2019s Cyber Monday Event iPhone 15 And iPad Offers Still Live: Latest Details<\/span><small class=\"link-embed__byline\">By <span class=\"link-embed__author\">David Phelan<\/span><\/small><\/span><span class=\"link-embed__thumbnail-wrapper\"><span class=\"link-embed__thumbnail allow-inline-style\" style=\"background-image: url(https:\/\/specials-images.forbesimg.com\/imageserve\/67487480423f373d168ac4cf\/960x0.jpg);\"\/><\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The report says that the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max will, \u201call switch to aluminum frames from stainless steel and titanium.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t quite buy this, not least because there are no stainless steel iPhones in the current range.<\/p>\n<p><fbs-ad position=\"inread\" progressive=\"\" ad-id=\"article-0-inread\" aria-hidden=\"true\" role=\"presentation\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The report says that there will be big changes to the way the iPhone looks at the back on the Pro models. \u201cThe back of the Pro and Pro Max models will feature a new part-aluminum, part-glass design. The top of the back will comprise a larger rectangular camera bump made of aluminum rather than traditional 3D glass. The bottom half will remain glass to accommodate wireless charging, two people said,\u201d according to The Information.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s not clear if the shape of the camera panel will change\u2014it\u2019s a rectangle now, of course, if a squarish one. But placing the cameras in a metal background rather than glass is a distinctive update.<\/p>\n<p>And, as the report says, has implications for wireless charging, which is why it suggests that the bottom half will be glass as now.<\/p>\n<p>All of which is also surprising because it\u2019s hard to see how you can achieve the seamlessness Apple likes so much with two different materials in play.<\/p>\n<p>The first iPhone in 2007 was mostly aluminum but with a bottom area that was plastic, and that looked good, but industrial design has changed a lot in the last 17 years.<\/p>\n<p>In all, I\u2019m not convinced that this is how Apple will go.
